Chapter 44 Break Up
Aelira’s POV

Alarion’s hand feels heavy and unfamiliar on mine. His touch fails to ignite
the warmth that it once did. I look at our connected hands, then decisively
push his away.
“Alarion, I no longer love you,” I state coldly.
My statement lingers in the crisp morning air outside the Unified Land
Registry. The affection I nurtured for twelve years has faded along with the
tears I shed the day my mother passed away. In this one–sided, brave love
story, I sacrificed my youth and indirectly contributed to my dear mother’s
demise.
“You can’t truly mean that,” Alarion whispers, his voice strained.
His amber eyes widen in confusion, searching my face for any hint of
doubt.
“I genuinely mean it,” I reply. “The only emotion left for you is hatred.”
My wolf, weary from the persistent emotional upheaval, lies tired within
- me. She had once recognized Alarion’s wolf as our mate, but now she remains quiet and almost indifferent to his presence.
Alarion shakes his head in disbelief. “No, I refuse to accept that. You must still be upset with me, right?”
The scent of his Alpha spikes with desperation. It used to affect me deeply, but now it barely registers.

I exhale deeply, too exhausted to argue. “Alarion, do you really think
discussing these matters? Cyrinne is expecting your pup!”
A thought crosses my mind: Even though that pup isn’t truly yours… I, the
one ending our mate bond, am bearing your real blood. But you will never
know this.
Alarion’s face falls as he reaches for me once more. “Aelira, that night, I
was drunk on wolf–whiskey and mistook Cyrinne for you…”
“Alarion! Enough of that,” I interject sharply. “Let’s simply go in and finalize
the mate bond severance procedures.”
I turn away from him and head towards the imposing stone structure. The
Unified Land Registry was erected generations ago, when werewolf packs
first established formal territorial agreements.

Alarion follows uncertainly. His potent Alpha scent reveals his inner strife-
a blend of regret, confusion, and lingering possessiveness.
The lobby is unexpectedly quiet for a weekday morning. A handful of
werewolves occupy the waiting area, some appearing excited, others
anxious. This is the place where all significant life events are officially
documented–territory claims, pack transfers, mate bonds, and, in our
case, the severance of a mate bond.
We make our way to the reception area, where an elderly she–wolf with
gray–streaked fur greets us with a warm smile.
“Good morning,” she says brightly. “Are you here to sign up for a formal
mating ceremony? You both look like a wonderful Alpha pair.”

Her assumption causes my wolf to bristle within me.
“No,” I respond firmly. “We are here to dissolve a mate bond.”

The official’s smile falters at my words. Her nose twitches slightly as she
detects the lingering connection between us.
“Oh, I see. I’m sorry to hear that,” she replies, her tone shifting toward professional compassion. “You both appear quite well–suited for one
another. Are you sure this is what you truly desire?”
“Yes,” I assert decisively. “This is not a rash decision.”
My hand instinctively moves to my abdomen, where our pup is developing.
I can’t help but notice the irony–severing our bond while pregnant with
Alarion’s child.
The official nods and hands us a numbered ticket. “Please take a seat. We
will call your number when it is your turn.”
We sit in an uncomfortable silence. Alarion continually glances in my
direction, opening his mouth to say something and then reconsidering. I
focus my gaze on the electronic display, willing our number to be called.
Fortunately, our turn arrives swiftly. We follow the official into a small,
private office, where the air is filled with the scent of official territory ink and binding magic.
“I will need both your identification documents and the mate bond
registration papers,” she instructs.
I retrieve my papers and the silver mate bond registration pendant that hangs around my neck. It feels heavy, the burden of being Luna of the

Thunder Pack suddenly overwhelming. I unclasp it and place it on the desk,
alongside my documents.
Alarion reaches into his inner jacket pocket and pulls out his papers, but
hesitates before giving them to her. His powerful Alpha aura wavers with
emotion. I see the pain and turmoil reflected in his amber eyes, and his
wolf’s scent begins to spike with distress.
“Is there an issue?” the official inquires, noticing his reluctance.
“No,” Alarion finally answers, placing his documents on the desk.
The official examines our paperwork meticulously. “Everything appears to
be in order, except for this.”
She points to a handwritten note on the last page of our agreement.
“This clause regarding territory rights to a den in the neutral zone was not
included in the original document,” she notes.
Alarion clears his throat. “I added that. It is my compensation to Aelira. I
want her to have the den she selected and oversaw the renovations of.”
I look at him in disbelief. The den in the neutral zone has been my project for years- a place I’ve envisioned as our family home. I’ve dedicated countless hours to designing every detail, from the moonlit windows to the
herbal garden.
“That wasn’t required,” I respond quickly, feeling irritated by his gesture, but more concerned about anything that could complicate the severance. “Can
we erase that part? I don’t want the den.”
“It’s yours,” Alarion insists. “I won’t take it back.”

His jaw is set in a way I recognize all too well as stubborn. My wolf paces anxiously beneath my skin, sensing potential complications arising.
“If both parties agree to this amendment, we can proceed,” the official
clarifies. “However, Mr. Riven will need to sign and officially stamp it.”
Alarion takes the document, signs his name with a flourish, and presses
his Alpha seal beside it. The ink glimmers for a moment, recognizing his
authority.
A wave of relief washes over me as the official continues to process our
paperwork. I can feel Alarion’s piercing gaze on me the whole time, his
amber eyes fixed on my face.
“I need both of you to sign the severance application now,” the official
states, sliding a formal document across the desk.
The paper is thick and cream–colored, adorned with embossed seals of the
territory along the edges. At the bottom, two lines await our signatures.
“After you sign, there will be a thirty–day waiting period before the
severance is finalized,” she explains. “You’ll need to come back then to
collect your mate bond severance certificates.”
“Thirty days?” I inquire, taken aback. “What’s the reason for the waiting
period?”
“It’s standard procedure,” she responds. “The waiting time allows your
wolves to acclimate to the separation and helps prevent any physical
shock to your systems. During this duration, either party can withdraw
from the severance if both agree.”

A feeling of unease knots in my stomach. What if Alarion changes his mind
in that thirty–day timeframe? What if Cyrinne’s manipulations regarding her pregnancy make him hesitate?
My wolf whimpers in uncertainty; I hadn’t anticipated this complication.
“It’s merely a formality,” the official reassures us, misinterpreting my
concern. “Most separations proceed without a hitch.”
I nod, accepting the pen she offers. I quickly sign my name on the line,
experiencing a curious mix of relief and anxiety.
When it is Alarion’s turn, he hesitates again. His hand quivers slightly as he takes the pen. I observe his claws briefly extend in emotion before he
regains control and signs the document.
“That concludes today’s process,” the official announces. “Please come
back in thirty days, specifically on May 15th, to finalize the severance.”
We express our gratitude and exit the office. In the lobby, Oriana awaits
me, practically bouncing with excitement.
“Aelira, how did it go? Is it completed?” she asks eagerly, her wolf’s energy
vibrating with enthusiasm.
“Yes,” I reply, a small smile flickering across my lips despite the ongoing
concerns about the waiting period.
Oriana’s joy is contagious. She takes my hands and squeezes them tightly. “You’re finally free! Well, almost free. Thirty days, right?”
“How did you find out about the waiting period?” I query.

“Everyone knows that,” she chuckles. “But it’s just a formality! The
important part is that you’ve both signed!”
Alarion has been standing silently behind us, but now he steps forward.
His voice is low and laced with bitterness.
“Are you truly that happy to sever our mate bond?”
