Aelira’s POV

As I immerse myself in the amusing insults that werewolves unleash on Cyrinne and Roderic online,
my phone abruptly rings.
“Alarion Riven” causes my smile to freeze, as though ice is shattering.
My wolf whines inside me, detecting my sudden anxiety.
Oriana, who has been laughing at another particularly harsh comment, notices the shift in my expression. She leans in, curiosity piquing her interest.
“What’s the matter? Who’s calling?”
Upon spotting Alarion’s name on my screen, her brow furrows deeply.
“Why is he trying to contact you?” she asks, her tone laced with disgust.
Without thinking, I hang up, refusing to answer. Yet, moments later, my phone rings again. Alarion’s
name blinks at me persistently.
“Persistent jerk,” I mutter quietly.
I reject the call once more, but he tries again a third time.

My patience finally wears thin. I dive into my phone settings and block his number entirely, feeling a
wave of relief wash over me.
“There,” I declare with satisfaction. “Issue resolved.”
However, a few moments later, an unknown number lights up my screen, ringing with that
unrecognized caller ID.
I gaze at it, knowing with certainty that it’s Alarion calling from yet another number.
Oriana sighs, clearly frustrated. “Just pick up and hear him out. If you don’t, this Alpha will likely keep calling from different lines. You can’t keep blocking him indefinitely, can you?”
She has a point. Considering Alarion’s stubbornness, he won’t stop pursuing me until I engage.
Gathering my courage, I take a deep breath and answer the call.
“Hi?”
Silence meets me on the other side. I can hear breathing, but no words come through.

Just as I start to doubt it’s really Alarion, his familiar voice finally breaks the stillness.
“The recording from the marking ceremony preparation,” he says, his tone icy and accusatory, “that was you and Daelor, wasn’t it?”
His straightforward attack catches me off guard, but I quickly regain my composure.
“Evidence?” I scoff, my voice heavy with scorn.
Alarion’s voice lowers menacingly.
“No evidence is necessary. To orchestrate a ceremony with that kind of technological prowess,
surveying the entire Northern Territory, only Daelor could achieve such a feat.”
I hold my tongue, cautious of his attempt to extract information. I refuse to give him the satisfaction of affirming his suspicions.
“Is that really why you called?” I ask coldly.
“No,” Alarion inhales deeply, and I can sense his struggle to keep his anger in check.
“Aelira, do you realize the cost of your childish act of revenge on the Thunder Pack’s territory
contracts? Ten billion moon–silver! A solid ten billion!”
A laugh escapes me before I can contain it.
“Only ten billion? That’s far too little!” I respond, delighting in the malice of my words.
“Aelira!” His voice cracks with rage.
“Alarion!” I snap back. “Instead of wasting your time pestering me, why not address the rumors surrounding your intended mate and your father? See if you can recover your precious ten billion!”
My words seem to puncture some of his fury. When he speaks again, his tone is more measured,
almost resigned.
“Cyrinne and I have already cancelled our marking ceremony,” he states softly. “I’ll have Cyrinne undergo another prenatal paternity test.”
I can’t help but drive the point home further.
“Don’t,” I say, feigning concern. “What if they’re innocent?”
“You…” Alarion sounds truly at a loss for the first time during our interaction.
He takes a deep breath and lapses into silence for what feels like an eternity, making me wonder if our call has disconnected. Eventually, his voice emerges, softer and tinged with an unexpected

vulnerability.
“Aelira, I’ve been reflecting over the last few days–how did we reach this stage?”

The abrupt transition from a business discussion to something personal catches me off guard. I
scowl, instantly wary of this new approach.
“I don’t have time for reminiscing,” I reply tersely. “If there’s nothing more to discuss, I’ll have to go.
Alarion lets out a laugh, though it carries a bitter, sorrowful quality that causes my wolf to whimper with unexpected empathy.
“Aelira, are you really so impatient with me that you can’t tolerate one more word?”
His tone carries a genuine sorrow that I haven’t heard in years. For an instant, it reminds me of the Alarion I once adored as a teenager.
I quickly dismiss that thought.
“Alarion, our mate bond is already broken,” I state with an expressionless demeanor.
“But I regret it.”
His words land like a physical impact. I can hardly process what I’ve just heard.
Regret? Alarion actually regrets ending our mate bond?
Throughout our entire relationship, I’ve always been in a subordinate position. I’ve bent over backward and contorted myself in unlikely ways, all to earn just a little less disdain from Alarion.
Love? That was something I never dared to dream about.
Yet here he is, expressing regret over letting me go. The irony is so biting that it makes my stomach
churn.
I inhale deeply, striving to contain the anger surging within me like molten lava.
“Alarion,” I say, maintaining a calm exterior despite the fury raging inside me, “I am not your fallback option. Don’t contact me again!”
Without waiting for his reply, I immediately disconnected the call. I then block his number as well and toss my phone aside with more force than necessary.
“Honestly, shameless wolves are unbeatable!” Oriana exclaims, her indignation clear.
Her eyes blaze with anger on my behalf. “He and Cyrinne are indeed a match made in hell. I suggest they lock themselves away together and live blissfully ever after–just don’t emerge to harm anyone

else!”

I take several deep breaths, trying to regain my composure. Alarion’s call has rattled me more than I’m willing to acknowledge.
What audacity that wolf shows! To think he could simply call and expect… what? That I would come running back to him?
However, there is a silver lining to this conversation with Alarion. Cyrinne’s plan has utterly collapsed!
Moreover, Alarion is doing exactly as Daelor predicted–he is doubting the validity of the prenatal paternity test and intends to have Cyrinne undergo another examination.
At this rate, he will likely realize within a few days that he is set to be an uncle, not a father!
The thought brings a wicked smile to my face.
“I really want to go to the hospital now to witness the spectacle…” Oriana muses, her eyes shining with mischief.
“There’s nothing quite like watching Cyrinne and Roderic, those despicable people, finally get what they deserve!”
Oriana’s proposal piques my curiosity. There is indeed nothing quite as gratifying as observing the chaos surrounding Cyrinne and Roderic.
Moreover, Alarion has just brought up the idea of scheduling another prenatal paternity test. The timing couldn’t be better.
“Why don’t we reach out to Dr. Nyven Leyric?” I propose, feeling enthused about the plan. “Let’s ask him which hospital is looking after Cyrinne! Then we can head over and enjoy the spectacle!”
Oriana shows a moment of reluctance. “Isn’t that too much of a hassle for Dr. Leyric?”
“What’s the harm? Friends assist each other, right?” I argue, attempting to persuade both her and myself. “At the very least, we might help Dr. Leyric locate his missing sister later; it’s a win–win!”
Oriana speaks so casually, yet I can tell she shares my eagerness to witness Cyrinne’s downfall.
Noticing my continued hesitation, she quickly grabs her mobile phone.
“Fine, if you’re not calling, I will!”
I swiftly take hold of her hand. “No, I’ll handle it.”
I dial Dr. Leyric’s number, excitement coursing through me.

The call connects swiftly, and Dr. Nyven Leyric sounds genuinely surprised to hear from me.
“Ms. Sunmere? This is unusual; you’re calling me directly? What can I do for you?”
I feel slightly awkward about making such a request, but I push forward regardless.
“It’s nothing serious, honestly. I just wanted to check, Dr. Leyric, do you happen to know which hospital Cyrinne was taken to?”
“Yes, she’s at Aethervale Hospital, in the Obstetrics and Gynecology ward,” he replies without missing a beat.
Then, it seems he recalls something significant, and his voice exhibits excitement.
“Wait! Ms. Sunmere, are you perhaps eager to know what’s going on? Ha–ha, don’t hang up–I’ll take you there…”
“No, Dr. Leyric…” I attempt to interject.
However, there’s no response from him, only the sounds of hurried footsteps and muffled conversation. Oriana and I share bewildered looks.
After what seems like an age, the receiver erupts with noise. We begin to hear multiple voices, the beeping of medical devices, and what appears to be an atmosphere of commotion.
Oriana and I lean in closer to the phone, straining to grasp what is unfolding on Dr. Leyric’s side.
Suddenly, his excited voice cuts through the chaos, clear as day.
“I’m telling you, there’s a real spectacle happening here!”
“What’s going on?” I query urgently, my interest now fully ignited.
“Cyrinne just attempted suicide again! She’s in the emergency room right away!”
