Chapter 82
Perhaps it was the effect of the night, but his voice seemed
especially gentle.
Kaneeta walked up to him, and before he could speak, she made
a decisive statement: “Mr. Hartwell, I’m sorry, I have no
intention of prying into your private life, but if you have a
girlfriend, I think we should keep an appropriate distance.”
Her voice was not loud, but it carried a sense of determination.
A rare trace of confusion flickered in Woodrow’s eyes.
“Girlfriend?”
Soon, he spoke again: “I don’t have a girlfriend.”
Kaneeta’s fingertips tightened around the hem of her clothes,
the fabric tracing a cool arc in her palm.
She had already prepared herself for the possibility that
Woodrow might be displeased by her mention of his private
affairs.
But unexpectedly, that “Girlfriend?” was filled with utter
bewilderment, like a stone cast into a lake, sending ripples of

astonishment across the depths of Woodrow’s eyes.
So he didn’t have a girlfriend after all.
The rumors were wrong.
Yet even so, aside from a sense of sudden realization, Kaneeta
felt neither joy nor relief.
Even if he didn’t have a girlfriend, so what?
She was about to be engaged to Miguel.
She still needed to keep her distance from Woodrow.
Woodrow’s hand, hanging at his side, curled slightly, his
knuckles gleaming pale in the dim light.
He took half a step forward, the breeze he stirred brushing
Kaneeta’s bangs, his cool presence suddenly drawing near.
“Where did Ms. Drayton hear such a rumor?” His voice was
even lower than before, the end of his sentence carrying a
subtle, almost imperceptible note of inquiry.
“No… I just happened to overhear someone mention it,” Kaneeta
replied evasively.
Of course, she couldn’t expose Cora in front of Woodrow.
Chapter 82
Since she didn’t want to say, Woodrow naturally wouldn’t press
her. He suddenly remembered that, during a previous meal
with Jaime, because Jaime wanted to introduce his daughter to
him, he had said he wasn’t single.
At the time, he hadn’t wanted to embarrass Jaime–after all,
they were family friends–and besides, he was about to be
engaged to Kaneeta. Even if Kaneeta didn’t have feelings for
him yet, he had already decided she was the only woman he
wanted to spend his life with.
Even if Kaneeta ultimately rejected him.
He would never pursue anything with another woman.
That was why he had said he wasn’t single.
He hadn’t expected the news to spread so quickly, or that it
would reach Kaneeta and cause such a misunderstanding.
Woodrow’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he let out a low sigh,
emotions surging in his eyes.
He gazed at Kaneeta’s averted brows and eyes.
It didn’t matter what others thought, but she…
He cared too much about her misunderstanding and distance.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Hartwell,” Kaneeta said. “I was being
presumptuous.”
es
“It’s not your fault,” Woodrow said with a soft laugh. “I didn’t
handle things well and caused you trouble.”
Had she been struggling with the idea of their engagement all
this time?
Did she think that if he had a girlfriend, the engagement should
be called off?
Fortunately, he had explained things in time.
“So, can Ms. Drayton stop being so formal with me now?”
Woodrow took another step closer.
Kaneeta instinctively stepped back. Her lips trembled, but her
tone remained firm: “No, it’s still necessary to keep our distance.”
“Why?” Woodrow frowned.
Kaneeta didn’t understand–didn’t he know why?
She was about to speak when Woodrow’s phone suddenly rang.
