Chapter 46
Over the next few days, Kaneeta was busy with project matters and was out of the office most of the time. This suited her just fine, as it meant she didn’t have to face Edmund’s face so often.
As the project was smoothly wrapping up, Kaneeta felt
increasingly at ease.
Soon, she would be able to leave this place for good.
Even in the midst of her hectic schedule, she didn’t forget to
prepare a birthday gift for her best friend, whose birthday was
coming up.
She and her best friend had grown up together, but in recent years her friend had been studying abroad, only returning to
Roseburn a few days ago.
They had already agreed that once Kaneeta was back in
Roseburn, they would have a proper get–together.
On her best friend’s birthday, while Kaneeta was having lunch at
a restaurant, she received a call from her.
“Ah-!” As soon as the call connected, Cora Hale’s excited scream
came through. “Neeta! How did you know I’ve always wanted

this camera? I love you so much!”
tto.
“Keep your voice down, you’re about to make me deaf.” Kaneeta instinctively held the phone away from her ear, only bringing it back when Cora calmed down. “I saw you liked an ad for this
brand on social media.”
“Aww, babe, I knew you were the best.” Cora was touched. “Just thinking about how I was abroad these past years and you were monopolized by that Edmund makes me so mad!”
Kaneeta was silent for a moment before she spoke: “Edmund and
I have broken up.”
“What? Really?” Cora’s tone was unmistakably happy. “You
finally came to your senses! I told you before he wasn’t right for
you…”
Before Cora went abroad, she had dinner once with Kaneeta and
Edmund.
Actually, Edmund’s behavior that time was impeccable–he was
very attentive to his girlfriend and considerate to her friend, while still maintaining proper boundaries.
But Cora always felt something was off, though she couldn’t
quite put her finger on it.
Chapter 46
She told Kaneeta that she didn’t think much of the man, but at the time Kaneeta had already fallen into Edmund’s gentle trap
and wouldn’t listen at all.
Later, Cora went abroad for her studies, and with her busy with
school and Kaneeta busy with work, they kept in touch less
frequently.
Still, their friendship remained as strong as ever. When Kaneeta learned the truth, she had wanted to tell Cora right away, but Cora was swamped with graduation matters at the time, and Kaneeta didn’t want to distract her, so she kept it to herself.
“Yeah, I really should have listened to you sooner,” Kaneeta said
with a bitter smile.
“Neeta, what made you finally see things clearly?”
“It’s a long story. I’ll tell you all about it when I get back to
Roseburn.””
“Okay… Oh! That reminds me! No wonder I heard my family
talking about you getting engaged yesterday. But I was drinking last night, so I thought I was just hearing things. Now that I think
about it, it’s true! Are you really getting engaged?”
“Yeah, I’ve already told my dad I’m willing,” Kaneeta replied. “But
I still don’t know who I’m supposed to be engaged to.”
Chapter 46
“Hey, I heard it yesterday!”
Cora recalled, “I remember, I think it was… Miguel Hartwell! The
son of the second branch of the Hartwell family. Do you
remember him?”
Kaneeta lowered her eyes, looking at the food in front of her. “Yeah, I vaguely remember him.”
“I heard my family mention his name, and they said you two would make a good match. I think so too–Miguel is quite handsome, and he’s a well–known artist now. I heard he’s going to
have an exhibition soon.”
Once Cora started chatting with her best friend, she couldn’t stop: “I’ve met Miguel a few times before, and he seemed nice–very gentle, definitely better than Edmund.”
Kaneeta also pictured Miguel’s face in her mind.
Indeed, Miguel was strikingly handsome, a genius artist, and his character was well regarded among the elite circles of Roseburn.
So her father had chosen someone from the Hartwell family as
her fiancé.
Suddenly, Kaneeta thought of Woodrow.
Did Woodrow know about the engagement between their two

families?
Lately, Woodrow had been helping her at every turn… Could it be because he knew she was going to be his future sister–in–law?
