I cried like rain, and my dad finally couldn’t bear it anymore, he slapped Savanna heavily.
Chapter 7
“You acted like an empress day by day, making Penelope serve you. I saw it all! Penelope is just a high school student, yet she worked tirelessly throughout the entire winter break, even having to do her own homework only when you were resting. And yet, you dare to blame her!”
Dad pointed at Savanna and cursed loudly, “I used to think you were gentle and believed that even if you married me, you wouldn’t treat Penelope badly. But I never expected you to take advantage of the situation! Let me tell you, there are plenty of women who want to have a child with me, and I don’t need you or half of you.”
Savanna covered her face and sobbed, at this moment, the doctor, noticing the commotion in the ward, walked in with a frown.
“This is a hospital, not a market, can you please stop making noise? The patients need rest,” the doctor said, flipping through the medical records. “Due to the prolonged delay in seeking treatment after the fall, the fetus was lost. During the recent dilation and curettage procedure, we discovered that her uterine wall is very thin, which decreases her chances of getting pregnant in the future.”
Dad covered his face in pain, “Was that child who fell a boy?” The doctor nodded and gave us some instructions before leaving.
After receiving the doctor’s affirmative answer, my father slumped in the chair like a deflated balloon, speaking in a low voice, “It seems that I am destined to never have a son in my lifetime.”
I rushed over and hugged my dad, crying loudly, “Dad, I’m sorry, it’s all my fault.” I desperately pounded my chest, pr
ng to be in unbearable pain.
Dad saw how sad I was, even sadder than him, and hurriedly comforted me, “It’s not your fault, you have done very well. Don’t cry, Penelope. Dad only has you as his daughter now, and your most important task is to study hard and get into a good university. Then Dad will be satisfied.”
“Well! I will go back and study even harder, I will definitely not disappoint your expectations, Dad.” I wiped away my tears, whispered goodbye to Savanna, and left with my head down.
When I walked out of the hospital, I had already regained my composure and appeared calm.
I wiped away the remaining tears at the corner of my eyes with a tissue, and I curled up the corners of my mouth.
This pair of scumbag man and cheap woman had such a big crack, fearing that they would spend their days in constant quarrels in the future.
At the beginning of the second semester of my sophomore year, I immersed myself in intense studying once again. With the weight lifted off my shoulders, I felt particularly motivated in my studies. Not only did I already have good grades, but now it seemed like I had divine assistance, as I consistently ranked at the top in subsequent mock exams.
Of course, I had to report this good news to my father. Now that he knew he had no hope of having a son, he put all his efforts into me. Hearing that my grades were getting better and better, he also became more generous with my monthly allowance.
I expressed my concern about his and Savanna’s current situation over the phone, but my dad angrily said, “She’s always suspicious and paranoid now, talking nonsense. I rarely go back home to avoid seeing her upset!”
Savanna went around telling people that I was the cause of her miscarriage, but those who had witnessed how respectful I had always been toward her didn’t believe her. Even her own friends shook their heads and advised her to stop digging herself into a hole, as she had completely alienated her only stepdaughter.
She knew that she would not be able to have children in the future, and she was afraid that my father would become more and more indifferent towards her. She started finding ways to ask my father for money. My father was already very displeased with her behavior of blaming me, and he completely ignored her, using the excuse of the recent downturn in business at the factory to brush her off. She constantly quarreled with my father, and their relationship has now reached an all–time low.
Upon hearing his words, I secretly laughed in my heart. Back then, when he was causing a divorce with my mom, he kept insisting that he was truly in love with that woman.
