Chapter 4
The next day, I got up early, prepared breakfast, and then went out.
Savanna woke up late in the morning and frowned when she realized that there was no one at home.
When I came back, she sat on the sofa with a displeased expression, glanced at me, and sarcastically said, “You said you would take care of me? On the first day of vacation, you disappeared without a trace. I was starving to death.”
I pointed at the dining table with a look of grievance and said, “Mom, I had already prepared breakfast. I saw that you hadn’t woken up yet, so I went out to buy some things.”
Dad walked in behind me and glared at Savanna. “I can see that you’ve been spoiled. Penelope, a high school student, wakes up early in the morning to make breakfast for you, and she even worries about your slippers not being comfortable enough to the point of dragging me out to buy you new ones. And what do you do? Instead of being grateful, you start complaining. She is my daughter, not your servant.”
Savanna was scolded by her father, and her eyes turned red. “I am the son of the Gardner family that you carried in your womb, and you dare to say such things to me!”
I saw my dad and wanted to retort, but I secretly laughed in my heart and pretended to be a peacemaker on the surface.
“Dad, please stop it. Mom is pregnant and her emotions are already unstable, we should be more understanding towards her. Besides, it was me who said yesterday that I would take care of Mom, and she got anxious when she woke up and couldn’t see me.” I gently advised my father.
Dad was still muttering under his breath, “Back then, your mom wasn’t so dramatic when she was pregnant with you.”
I sneered inwardly, and at that moment, I suddenly remembered my mother’s kindness. How shameless.
I took out a pair of brand–new slippers from the shopping bag and handed them to Savanna with enthusiasm. “Mom, the soles of these slippers are very soft, so they will be very comfortable to wear. Your feet might swell later, so I purposely bought a size bigger.”
She looked at me as I squatted down to put on her shoes, and her complexion improved significantly.
I cheerfully helped her sit at the dining table for breakfast, without a trace of anger, and instead happily went to help her collect the clothes on the balcony.
Dad looked at me sympathetically and, while I went out to the balcony, he slipped a stack of hundred–dollar bills into my pocket. He whispered softly, “Penelope has caused you so much distress.”
I smiled and pushed my dad out of the door. “It’s nothing, Mom is carrying the hope of our future, the Gardner family. It doesn’t matter if I suffer a little. Dad, you should hurry to work! There are still a bunch of things at the factory that you need to take care of!”
Dad happily went out, and I watched Savanna sitting at the dining table like an empress, waiting to be served, and I also smiled happily.
Just you wait! I would lift you up to the sky and then drop you down from a great height, that’s what I call satisfaction.
Losing everything after having it is much more painful than never having it at all.
In the following days, I can describe my actions towards Savanna as meticulous.
She took a step, and I supported her, I prepared whatever she wanted to eat, I added clothes for her when she felt cold, and before she went to sleep, I held hot water for her to soak her feet. In short, I was comparable to the ancient palace maids.
Under my care, Savanna’s body also swelled up, gaining thirty kilograms in less than a month. Even the doctor who conducted her prenatal check–ups warned her severely to control her diet.
But how could she easily control it when I had expanded her appetite?
