Chapter 19
Mia froze
Her eyes widened in shock as the police officer’s words hung in the air. “What?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The officer’s expression remained impassive. “I said you’re free to go. Walk over to the counter and collect your belongings. I’m going to go release your family.”
Mia’s legs felt like jelly as she made her way to the counter. She was stunned. What had just happened?
Alex came through for her? She wants to cry, she wants to cry an ugly long cry
As she collected her phone and other belongings she couldn’t help but feel her heart swell in her chest.
Her mother and siblings emerged from the cell, looking around in confusion. Their eyes landed on Mia.
“Are you sure?” she hears her mom ask the police woman, her voice so confused.
“The fuck how?”
“How the hell…?” Ann began.
Her mother’s eyes were wide with curiosity and confusion as she stared at her “How did you…?” she began, but her voice trailed off.
Mia said nothing, simply collecting her things and walking outside. Her family followed closely behind, their faces a full display of shock and confusion.
As soon as they stepped out into the cool night air, Lily turned to Mia. “What the fuck, Mia? How did you do it?”
Ann’s eyes were shining with gratitude. “I don’t care how you did it, thank you, Mia.”
Mia shrugged, trying to play it cool.
“I just called a cab.” Ann says, smiling happily. ” oh fuck! I never believed in this life I’ll be this happy and grateful because of Mia”
Mia snorts, ignoring her sister’s comment.
From the corner of her eyes she can see the look her mother was giving her. She has a lot, like a whole lot to ask and say.
But Mia wasn’t going to give her that opening, not tonight
As they stood on the sidewalk, waiting for the cab to arrive, Mia needed to escape.
“I’m going to go sit in the park for a bit,” she said, nodding towards the small green space behind them.
Her family stared at her in confusion. “But the cab will be here any minute,” Ann pointed out.
Mia shrugged. “Go on without me. I need some fresh air.”
As her family reluctantly agreed and began to walk away, Mia felt a sense of relief wash over her. She made her way to the park, finding a quiet bench to sit on.
The cool night air enveloped her, and Mia felt her emotions begin open from where she tied it down. Tears sting at the corners of her eyes as she thought about everything that had happened.
