Chapter 5 An Unexpected Pregnancy
“Stephanie, say something!”
Maverick finally lost his temper. “Do you think it’s fun? Isn’t it enough that I’ve already lowered myself for you?”
I slowly lifted my eyes. “Why are you here, Maverick? Have you ever truly loved me?”
He looked stunned, probably caught off guard by the question. He didn’t respond right away.
“What about Reagan? Do you love her?”
Maverick answered almost instantly, “She’s not like you. She needs me.”
Watching how serious he was, I let out a bitter laugh. Sometimes, love could be reduced to something so plain.
When he called my name, it always came with frustration. But when he said Reagan’s name, it was full of softness.
I rubbed my forehead, exhausted, and was about to speak when his phone rang.
“Reagan, what’s wrong?”
“Maverick, where are you? I’m hungry.”
“I’m dealing with some small matters. I’ll be home soon to cook for you.”
After the call ended, Maverick looked at me blankly. “Whether you go back or not, I’m not agreeing to the divorce. Stay at Mabel’s place as long as you want.”
Then, he turned and left in a rush.
He was heading home to make food for Reagan because she was hungry.
I watched him walk away, my eyes stinging without me realizing it.
In all seven years of our marriage, he never once cooked for me.
He always said he didn’t know how. But when Reagan said she was hungry, he dropped everything just to cook for her.
I bit my lip and muttered, “I give up, Maverick. I won’t hope for anything from you anymore.”
In the days that followed, I could barely eat.
My stomach pain kept getting worse, and I threw up more and more often.
Mabel grew worried and insisted on taking me to the hospital for a check–up.
When she was registering me, I suddenly felt dizzy and weak. I couldn’t stand straight and stepped backward.
Luckily, someone caught me just in time.

Chapter 5 An Unexpected Pregnancy
“Stephie?”
A deep voice came from beside me. I looked up and saw a familiar, handsome face.
A hint of surprise lit up in my eyes as I straightened up with effort.
“Yrian? You’re back?”
+5 Free Coins
Yrian Lynch had been my close childhood friend. He’d studied medicine overseas for years. I hadn’t expected him to return.
“I’ve been back for a while. What’s going on with you?”
Sitting in his office and seeing how much Yrian had grown, I couldn’t help but say, “You’ve turned into a good- looking guy.”
“You’ve changed a lot as well,” he replied.
He was holding my medical report, but his face didn’t look good.
“Why do you look so serious? Am I dying or something?”
“Not at all. I should be congratulating you instead.”
Yrian smiled and handed me the report. “You’re pregnant, Stephie. About two months along.”
I froze. Pregnant? Was I having Maverick’s baby?
“Does Maverick know yet? He’d probably be thrilled.”
Yrian picked up his phone. “I’ll call him and ask him to come get you.”
“No!”
I grabbed his hand quickly. “Don’t say anything to him. We’re getting a divorce.”
Yrian looked confused. “But… I thought you loved him?”
That was how everyone saw it–I was the one deeply in love with Maverick. Divorce just didn’t seem possible
to us.
“What about the baby then?” Yrian asked hesitantly.
“I’ll think about it,” I said, grabbing the report and getting up from my seat. “Please don’t tell anyone, especially not Maverick.”
Mabel was the most thrilled when she found out I was pregnant.
“Is it a boy or a girl? Can I be the godmother? Your baby with Maverick is going to be so adorable! Stephie, I’m so excited. You’re the first of us to have a kid!”
She chattered the whole way, completely ignoring the fact that I was planning to divorce Maverick.
