Chapter 32 Maverick Nearly Crippled
“What’s the matter? Tell me.”
I checked my watch. Yrian was already on the way to pick me up, and I didn’t want to make him wait.
“Is your boyfriend picking you up soon?”
Eva lowered her coffee cup and arched her brow in my direction.
I met her eyes. “Let’s skip the small talk.”
“Fine,” she replied with a sly smile. “Ms. Quinn, I used to believe you were the one who loved Mr. Stone the most, but now I’m not so sure. If you really did, why haven’t you gone to see him at the hospital after all this time?”
“Why would I visit him? I honestly hope he’s dead. There’s no reason for me to go.”
Maybe I spoke louder than I thought because people nearby began to glance over.
“Are you positive Mr. Stone caused that fire? Do you even know he was hurt in it too? His leg nearly became crippled. Do you know that?”
Eva was clearly upset. It was obvious she cared about Maverick.
Wait, she said his leg nearly became crippled?
So during the time I couldn’t reach him, he was actually in the hospital?
But when I saw him that night, he looked fine. His leg didn’t seem injured at all.
“That’s not my problem. He set the fire himself. Even if he dies, it has nothing to do with me,” I remarked..
“What if I told you he’s really dying?”
Eva suddenly broke into tears, two streaks falling down her face. She quickly grabbed a tissue to wipe them, trying hard to pull herself together.
“I came to let you know that the stab you made that day hit his vital organ The doctors say it got infected, and he may not make it.”
She stood up, her voice sincere. “I hope you’ll consider going to see Mr. Stone, just one last time.”
I stayed where I was, staring at her, not sure what to say.
If he really died, shouldn’t I be glad?
Then why does it feel like there’s a weight pressing down on my chest?
“Ms. Quinn…”
“That’s enough.”
Eva looked like she wanted to continue, but I cut her off before she could.
“If he actually dies, I’ll show up at the funeral,”

Just then, Yrian arrived and noticed how pale I looked. He reached out and gently held my hand. “Are you
okay?”
“It’s nothing. Maverick’s secretary came to say he is dying.”
“What?” Yrian’s brows knit together. “That’s so sudden. How did it get this bad?”
“Sudden? He brought it on himself. He deserves whatever happens!”
My voice trembled with anger, my eyes burning with hatred.
After a short pause, Yrian gave a slight nod. “Are you hungry? What do you feel like eating tonight?”
A big dinner! Time to celebrate!” I replied.
Yrian brought me to the restaurant I liked the most. I actually used to come here a lot with Maverick.
Back then, our meals were always quiet. Maverick rarely spoke, and sitting through dinner with him felt more like a punishment than anything else.
But Yrian isn’t like that. He cuts the steak for me, tells funny stories to cheer me up, and even gently wipes the sauce off my lips.
The steak tonight is delicious, but I just don’t feel like eating anymore.
We were by the window, and the breeze from outside brushed against my skin. It should’ve been relaxing.
Instead, I felt like I couldn’t breathe, like my chest was caving in.
Yrian suddenly said, “Stephie, my mom wants to invite you over for dinner at our place tomorrow.”
“Wait, really?”
1 froze for a second, totally surprised by what he said.
We hadn’t been dating that long, and I never imagined I’d meet his parents so soon.
“If you’re not ready, that’s totally fine. We can do it another time,” Yrian said with a soft smile, sliding the plate with the cut–up steak toward me.
“You hardly ate anything. Try to eat a bit more.”
His smile was still there, but I could see that he was feeling a little letdown.
I gripped my knife and fork a little harder, trying to smile. “I’m fine, I’m just a bit nervous. It’s my first time meeting your parents. Should I bring a gift?”
Wait, you agreed?” he asked.
Yrian’s face lit up with a big smile, his teeth bright and even.
He still looked the same–pale, handsome, and elegant, with that gentle charin he always had.
A guy like him, maybe I shouldn’t hurt him after all.
Yeah.
I nodded eagerly. “Come with me tomorrow to pick out some gifts.”
