Not long after that, I had an interview at Yrian’s company, and luckily, they gave me the job. At last, I found a stable job.
The salary was decent enough for me to afford my own place, so I chose to leave Mabel’s house.
She had started dating someone, and her boyfriend came over quite a bit, so I didn’t want to be in the way.
I hadn’t seen Maverick at all lately, and there hadn’t been any updates about him either. It was as if he had completely vanished from my world.
I rented a small house. It wasn’t big, but it felt warm and comfortable.
Every day, I went to work, sometimes exchanging a few texts or calls with Mabel.
Now and then, Yrian would give me a lift after work, and we’d hang out on weekends, sometimes taking walks in the park or grabbing dinner at a restaurant.
I really believed things would stay
Calm and simple like this forever.
But one evening, when I got back from work, I noticed someone standing in front of my door.
In the poorly lit stairway, the man slowly lifted his head, showing a serious and distant expression.
It was none other than Maverick.
As soon as I saw him, all the anger and bitterness I had pushed down came rushing back.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“I missed you, Stephie.”
He stood up straight, no longer leaning against the wall, and said tiredly, “How have you been lately?”
“Whether I’m doing well or not has nothing to do with you. Just leave.”
I glared at him, balling up my hands into fists, scared I might actually lose control and hit him.
“There are a few things I want to explain. Please, just give me a minute.”
He moved closer with each step, but I kept stepping back just as slowly.
I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to hold back and I might lose control and kill him!
“Stop talking, Maverick! Just shut up! You killed my parents! I never want to see your face again. Leave! Don’t ever come back!
“Stephie, please, I swear I didn’t start that fire. Can’t you trust me?”
Even as I completely lost it, Maverick didn’t step away. In fact, he moved in closer.
Watching him come toward me, I panicked and pulled a small dagger out of my bag, pointing it at him with trembling hands.
I always carried it for safety, never imagining I’d be holding it like this, ready to use it on him.

I’ve kept my pain buried deep, trying not to let my need for revenge take over. That was the best I could do.
But him showing up like this, out of nowhere, shattered the last bit of control I had left.
I shouted, “Don’t come any closer! I’m warning you or I’ll kill you!”
“If dying by your hand will convince you that I didn’t kill your parents, then do it,” he said.
Without a shred of hesitation, he plunged straight into my dagger, right before my stunned eyes.
Right then, I heard the awful noise of a blade cutting through the skin.
In no time, red blood spread across Maverick’s white shirt.
Seeing it happen made my heart race and my face twisted with hatred and confusion.
“Why? Why are you doing this to me, Maverick? Why won’t you leave me alone?”
I collapsed to the floor, and the dagger slipped from my hand with a sharp clink.
Maverick knelt beside me, wrapping his arms around me tightly.
“Stephie, please … will you let me explain now?”
Before he could say another word, I shoved him away with all my strength. “No, Maverick. I don’t care what you say. I’ll never forgive you. Not ever.”
I bolted up the stairs, unlocked the door with shaking hands, and slammed it shut behind me.
Everything outside went silent, not even a single sound.
I leaned back against the door, then slowly slid down until was sitting on the cold floor.
