Chapter 28 The Murderer Is Maverick
I had a dream. In it, my dad held my hand and solemnly entrusted me to Maverick.
He said to Maverick, “She’s my only daughter, and I love her dearly. Treat her well. If one day you no longer love her, bring her back to me.”
My dad’s hand was large and warm.
Maverick’s hand was cold, but I still cagerly held onto it.
I thought that when I finally married Maverick, it was the happiest thing in my life.
But now, I regret it. If it weren’t for Maverick, my parents wouldn’t have died, and I wouldn’t have lost the two people I loved most in the world in one night.
Tears fell, and the whole world felt gray.
“Yrian, look, I think Stephie’s waking up,” Mabel’s voice echoed in my ears.
Her voice was hoarse, probably from crying with me for so long.
My parents always treated her like their goddaughter and were very kind to her.
Someone took my hand, and I knew it was Yrian.
“Are you awake? If you don’t want to open your eyes, just continue to sleep.”
I slowly opened my eyes, and the first thing I saw was Yrian’s worried face and Mabel’s eyes, swollen like walnuts.

“Stephie, are you okay? You scared me.”

I stared blankly at the ceiling, my mind blank.
I suddenly wondered if everything that had happened was just a dream.
My parents were still home waiting for me. They were perfectly okay.
“Mabel, I had a dream. I dreamed my parents died in a fire.”
I blinked, staring blankly at Mabel.
“Isn’t it crazy? How could I dream something like that? My parents are probably still waiting for me at home. I need to go back.”
I tried to get out of bed, throwing off the covers, but Mabel quickly grabbed me and held me tight.
“Stop it, Stephie, please!” Tears suddenly streamed down her face as she hugged me so tight I couldn’t breathe.
“Your parents are gone. That wasn’t a dream, it’s real! Stephie, you have to pull yourself together. You still have me, you still have Yrian. We’ll be by your side.”
“Let me go! I want to go home! Mabel, please, let me go!”

At first, I struggled gently, but then I grew more forceful, before eventually breaking down.
“I don’t believe it! I don’t believe they’re really gone! How could they just leave me like that?”
“Stephie…
Mabel cried with me, our sobs echoing in the hospital room.
At that moment, Maverick’s figure suddenly appeared at the door.
The instant I saw him, I rushed at him like a madwoman.
“Maverick, did you do this? Did you set that fire? Did you kill my parents? You said you’d go after my family if I didn’t get back with you, so you killed them, didn’t you?!”
I hit him with all my strength, my face twisted with hatred and despair.
Seeing my tears and despair, Maverick stood still, letting me hit him repeatedly.
I hit him hard, and he stumbled back with each blow.
Yrian held me back. “Stephie, please stop! The investigation isn’t over. We don’t know for sure that Maverick did this!”
“It’s him, it must be him!”
I glared at him, the hatred that had been suppressed inside me suddenly erupting.
I could barely hold back the urge to kill him!
“It’s good that you’re okay.”
Maverick slowly looked up at me, then told Yrian, “Take care of her. I’ll find out who started the fire and give her an explanation.”
As Maverick walked away, I looked at his retreating form and growled in despair, “Maverick, marrying you is my biggest regret!”
Maverick stiffened, but then quickly left.
At that instant, all my strength left me, and I collapsed to the floor.
Yrian quickly caught me. “Stephie, Mabel’s right. You need to be strong. You still need to handle your parents‘ funeral.”
I blinked, and for the first time, my empty gaze finally found focus.
Yes, Yrian was right. I was the only one left in my family now. I had to pull myself together.
