After Maverick left, I felt drained and collapsed heavily onto the floor.
Esme quickly rushed over and helped me to a chair.
“Mrs. Stone, there’s something I feel I should mention, but I’m not sure…
I weakly glanced at her. “Go ahead, say it.”
“Actually, Mr. Stone is quite pitiful. His mother passed away when he was very young, and his father wasn’t kind to him, so he hasn’t had a happy life. I could see he became much happier after you married him seven years ago.”
“Really?”
I chuckled bitterly. I already knew how hard Maverick’s childhood had been.
Maverick’s mother died when he was young, and Philip was always strict with him. Robert also had high expectations for him.
Maverick’s temperament as a child was just as cold as it was now.
Seeing him every time after Philip disciplined him would break my heart, and I would secretly promise myself that one day I would marry Maverick and make sure he felt the warmth of a family.
If Reagan hadn’t come back, if my child had been born safely, Maverick would probably be happy now.
But in this world, there were no ifs.
“Yeah, since you left, Mr. Stone has been down every day. He often stares at your things. We can all tell he’s been in love with you for a while now, he just doesn’t know how to show it. About Ms. Brown, he doesn’t love her at all. She keeps pressuring him to marry her, and even threatened suicide-”
“Reagan tried to kill herself?”
“Yes, last night when she came back, she had a huge argument with Mr. Stone. She even held a knife, threatening to die in front of him. They fought all night. She just left before you arrived!”
I frowned, surprised by how much had happened in just one night.
Reagan was celebrating her birthday at Nightfall Club yesterday. Shouldn’t she have been happy? Why did they suddenly have an argument?
“What were they fighting about?”
“It’s because of you, Mrs. Stone.” Esme sighed. “Ms. Brown blamed you for Mr. Stone’s hand injury. She asked him if he still had feelings for you, and when he didn’t answer, she went mad, saying she came back from abroad for him. She threatened she’d kill herself if he didn’t marry her-”
I pressed my lips together and glanced up toward the stairs.
Oh, Maverick, if you’d only known, why did you do it in the first place?
“Mr. Stone finally had the courage to ask for a remarriage, although his approach was wrong, he does want to be with you again. Mrs. Stone, please think about it. I can tell you still love him.”

“I don’t know. I’m so lost, Esme.”

I buried my head in my arms. I was already so confused, and now Esme’s words only made things worse.
I still couldn’t figure out who Maverick truly loved.
What if, after we remarried, he got tangled up with Reagan again?
“I’m going back now.”
My mind was a mess, so I decided to talk to Mabel and ask her on 27
I went to see Mabel. When she heard Maverick wanted to reconcile, she said it was like watching a trying–to- win–your–ex–back disaster and told me to agree quickly.
Her words were the same as Esme’s. She said she could tell I still had feelings for Maverick, and that if I couldn’t let go, I shouldn’t give up so easily.
That night, I didn’t go home and stayed at her place.
