Chapter 20 A Proposal?
I arrived at Nightfall Club at exactly 8 p.m.
The place was beautifully decorated–like a proposal was about to happen.

As soon as I got there, someone came up to me and said, “Mr. Stone is really serious this time! Going all out just to win a woman’s heart, huh?”
I glanced at him, confused. I had no idea what he was talking about.
Seeing the confusion on my face, he looked surprised. “You don’t know? I heard Mr. Stone booked out the entire place tonight just to make her smile! What’s so special about that woman to make Mr. Stone go this far?”
I had no idea who this woman was, but I was pretty sure it wasn’t me.
Could it be Reagan?
Did Maverick ask me to come tonight just so I could watch him propose to her in person?
I bit my lip and found a corner to sit down.
A nearby waiter walked over and handed me a rose.
“This rose is for you. Later, when the leading lady appears, please give it to her.”
“What are you doing? Don’t you recognize her? You still don’t know who the flowers are for? If Mr. Stone fails to win her over tonight, you’re responsible!”
He quickly took the rose from my hands and apologized, “Sorry about that–he’s new and didn’t recognize you. Please don’t take it personally!”
With that, the two of them hurried off.
I started to notice more and more people glancing in my direction
Thinking back to what the waiter said about “win her over,” I couldn’t help but wonder–did Maverick invite me here because he planned a proposal for me? Was this his way of asking to get back together?
My heart was racing. Panic started to set in.
What if Maverick had really proposed in front of everyone that night? What was I supposed to do then–turn him down on the spot?
Just as I was starting to panic, Maverick walked in.
The room immediately buzzed with excitement.
“Quiet down, everyone! Our leading man is here!”
The noise died down, and Maverick’s eyes landed on me almost instantly. With a bouquet of roses in nand, he began walking toward me.
Soft, romantic music filled the air, and the lights changed rhythmically with the tune.

Chapter 20 A Proposal?
As he got closer, my breath caught in my throat–it was getting harder and harder to breathe.
My heart was pounding in my throat, and my palms were slick with sweat.
I wanted to run, but my legs felt like they were made of lead, I couldn’t move.
You’re here,” he said, finally stopping in front of me.
The bar fell so silent, that it felt like you could hear everyone breathing.

“It’s impossible. Maverick. I’m not getting back together with you!”
I cut him off before he could even speak.
And suddenly, another glamorous woman appeared at the entrance.
The moment she entered, a voice from the bar’s speakers rang out overhead, “Now, let’s give a warm welcome to tonight’s leading lady–Ms. Brown! And let’s all wish her a happy birthday!”
As soon as the words fell, the room erupted into applause.
Maverick turned, still holding the bouquet, and walked toward Reagan.
Under everyone’s admiring gaze, Reagan took the flowers from him.
“Kiss! Kiss!” someone in the crowd shouted.
Blushing, Reagan rose on her tiptoes and placed a gentle kiss on Maverick’s lips.
As I watched the scene, I felt like I couldn’t catch my breath.
I quickly turned and stumbled toward the restroom, struggling to keep steady.
Looking at my blushed face in the mirror, I chuckled self–deprecatingly.
What was I thinking? That Maverick had invited me here to get back together?
My heart ached with every breath I took. The image of Reagan kissing him kept playing in my mind, and the pain was overwhelming.
It was in that moment I realized–everything I’d told myself about not loving him was a lie.
I hadn’t truly moved on from my feelings for Maverick.
I had been fooling myself all along.
