Chapter 2 Divorce
Chapter 2 Divorce
No one answered the first call. Or the second.
Still, I didn’t give up. I dialed one more time.
This time, someone finally picked up. It was Maverick, his voice low and distant.
“I’ve got something to do. Don’t wait for me. I’ll spend time with you tomorrow.”
“I-”
Before I could get another word out, a soft, sweet voice interrupted.
“Maverick, I’m starving. What should we eat?”
I recognized that voice right away.
It was Reagan. She had come back.
A sharp ache pierced my chest, and I gripped my phone tighter. “Maverick, today’s our anniversary.”
“Is the anniversary that important?“,
He snapped, “Didn’t I say I’d accompany you tomorrow? Isn’t that enough?”

“So Reagan means more to you than I do?” I sneered. “After all this time, you’re still hung up on her, aren’t you?”
“Is the steak still medium–rare, Maverick?”
Reagan’s voice called again, and Maverick rushed to say, “I’ve got to go. We’ll talk when I’m back.”
“What if I want to talk about our divorce now?”
“Stephanie, why do you always overreact?”
Even from afar, I could sense Maverick losing his patience.
“You’ve brought up divorce many times, but has it ever happened? That’s enough, Stephanie. Happy anniversary.”
Happy? That word couldn’t feel more wrong.
The call ended with a cold beep, and I let out a bitter laugh. He didn’t even let me say goodbye properly.
I pulled out the divorce papers and signed my name without hesitation.
Then, I packed everything I owned and left Maverick’s villa.
I didn’t want my parents to worry, so I stayed at a friend’s place.
Are you truly going to divorce Maverick?”
That was the eighth time Mabel Jackson had asked me. She still looked shocked.

While folding my clothes, I nodded. “I already signed it.”
“Stephanie, you must be sick.”
She touched my forehead. “It’s Maverick we’re talking about–the guy you’ve loved for 15 years.”
Yes, I had feelings for him since I was ten. Now I was 25.
But Maverick never felt the same. His heart always belonged to Reagan.
“I’m done loving him,” I said, calmly brushing her hand away.
Mabel looked like she wanted to respond, but my phone rang.
It was Maverick.
It was already ten in the morning. He’d just noticed I wasn’t home, which meant he hadn’t come back all night.
There was no doubt where he’d been.
“Aren’t you going to pick up?”
He called five times. I ignored all of them.
Mabel held her head in disbelief. “You’re serious about this, aren’t you?”
I kept quiet. Soon, Maverick sent me a message.
“Where did you go? Are you truly going to divorce me? Are you serious?
“Don’t be silly. You know I won’t go along with it.
“You’re divorcing me just because I missed our anniversary? Come on, Stephanie … you can’t be that petty.”
He fired off three messages in a row, all full of disbelief.
Mabel also chimed in, “All this over one missed anniversary? Maverick’s got a lot on his plate–you know that.”
I pulled the curtain aside and said weakly, “Our anniversary wasn’t yesterday. It’s on the 15th next month.”
Mabel fell silent right away.
I almost brought up Reagan, but I changed my mind.
Whoever Maverick chose to be with from now on had nothing to do with me.
I turned off my phone and kept packing.
While folding clothes, I suddenly started sweating, and my stomach twisted painfully.
I ran to the bathroom, barely making it before I started throwing up.
Mabel was startled. “Stephie, are you alright?”
“My stomach’s acting up, I mumbled.

The pain was so intense that I couldn’t even stand straight. My stomach had always given me trouble.
Back then, I’d spend hours cooking for Maverick, waiting for him even after the food had gone cold, but he never came home to eat.
Eventually, I started to have stomach issues. I hadn’t eaten anything since yesterday, and now the pain was unbearable.
“You idiot.” Mabel’s voice was choked with tears. “Why torture yourself like this? Come on, I’m taking you to the hospital.”
