Chapter 18 Beg Me
Before going to see Maverick, I prepared thoroughly.
For instance, I organized details showing that my dad’s company still had investment potential, like our steadily improving performance, albeit slow. My dad had been working tirelessly to keep the business going.
This company had been my grandfather’s legacy, and it was my dad’s lifeblood. If it collapsed, he would be devastated.
I arrived at Maverick’s office. I used to come here often to bring him lunch.
Not many people knew about our divorce, so the guards didn’t stop me and even let me take the CEO’s private elevator.
When I got there, Maverick was in a meeting.
Knowing I was there, he instructed his secretary to have me wait outside.
I waited from 9 a.m. until 11:30, with no sign of Maverick wanting to see me.
Impatient, I asked an employee coming out of the conference room, “Excuse me, where is Mr. Stone?”
“Mr. Stone? He’s already gone for lunch!”
The employee looked surprised. “Mrs. Stone, he left using the private elevator. Didn’t he tell you?”
Only then did I realize Maverick was playing games with me.
“Mrs. Stone, should I take you to where Mr. Stone is having lunch?”
“No, thank you.”
I shook my head and sat back down, determined to continue waiting.
Since Maverick intended to make things difficult for me, I needed to show some sincerity.
At two in the afternoon, Maverick returned. Seeing me still waiting, he looked unsurprised.
“Mr. Stone, can I have a moment of your time?”
I stood up and followed him into his office.
Maverick settled on the couch, his long legs crossed, leisurely flipping through a magazine.
“Say what you have to say now. You have five minutes.”
“I want to show you some of our company’s recent projects. They are already generating revenue, and I believe we will see new breakthroughs by the end of the year.”
Straightening my back, I handed the documents to him.
Maverick glanced at the files with his striking eyes.
“New breakthroughs? How much? One million? Two million?”

He sneered, a layer of frost covering his sharp features.
“Stephanie, do you know how much Stone Group makes in an hour? Far more than a million.”

He tossed the magazine aside and stood up, looking down at me. “In the past, I invested in your useless company because you were my wife. I didn’t want my father–in–law to seem too shabby. But now, what do you have to offer?”
Clenching the documents tightly, I bit my lip and met Maverick’s gaze.
“What will it take for you to continue investing?”
“Beg me, and I will.”
He returned to the couch, arms sprawled over the back, looking arrogantly indifferent.
Honestly, seeing him like this made my skin crawl.
I wanted to throw the documents at his face and tell him how much I despised him.
But I knew how important this company was to my dad. Without investment, it would soon disappear.
So, I swallowed my pride and lowered my head.
“Please, Maverick. I’m begging you.”
“This is not how you beg.”
Maverick’s voice was icy as he continued, “Be at the Nightfall Club at eight tonight. There’s an event, and I want to see just how sincere you are.”
“Okay.”
I agreed almost instantly. Whatever it took to save Dad’s company, I’d do it.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave.”
I had spent almost the entire day here without eating.
My stomach pain returned, and of all times, I hadn’t brought my medication.
