Chapter 14 Back to Stone Residence
Staying at home for a few days, my mood gradually improved.
I hadn’t yet told Mom and Dad about the divorce. Just as I was looking for an opportunity to bring it up, a maid ran up to me to announce that Maverick had arrived and was downstairs.
I walked to the staircase and saw Maverick sitting on the sofa.
As usual, he sat there with a stern expression, while my parents‘ attitude toward him was a mix of fear and a touch of ingratiation.
I understood. Our family business had always been modest, practically negligible compared to the Stones.
In the early years, when Dad’s business failed, it was Maverick who provided funds time and again to save us.
Thus, in front of Maverick, my dad looked less like his father–in–law and more like a subordinate.
Watching Dad bow and scrape as he constantly refilled tea, I hurried downstairs.
Seeing me, Maverick lifted his gaze.
Our eyes met, and it felt like an eternity passed.
“Stephie, long time no see.”
He rarely called my name so gently, giving me a fleeting sense of our early marriage days.
But unfortunately, we are divorced now.
“What do you want?”
“I’ve come to take you back.”
Maverick said, “You’ve stayed here a few days; Grandpa misses you a bit.”
His words were vague, implying he knew my parents weren’t aware of our divorce yet.
He probably thought my silence meant there was still a chance for us to reconcile.
I stared at the man before me, expressionless. It had only been a few days, yet he looked significantly more haggard.
It seemed his first love wasn’t taking good care of him.
“Fine.”
Without any unnecessary words, I nodded and left with Maverick.
Maverick was probably surprised by how easily he could take me away; I saw a fleeting look of delight in his
eyes.
He thought I had forgiven him. As soon as we got in the car, he started talking about recent happenings at the
Stones‘.
About how his grandpa’s health was deteriorating and his dad returning from abroad.

Chapter 14 Back to Stone Residence
A bunch of trivial matters, nonstop chatter.
I remained silent the entire time, not responding even once.
In the past, this dynamic was the opposite.
Arriving at Maverick’s house, gazing at the familiar villa, I stepped inside with a completely different state of mind.
The furnishings in the hall hadn’t changed, except for one addition on the sofa.
It was Reagan.
Seeing my return, her face changed drastically.
“Stephanie? Why are you here?”
Without waiting for my answer, Reagan turned to Maverick, her tone harsh.
“Maverick, you were gone all morning, and it turns out you went to find her? What’s this supposed to mean? You want to get back together with her?”
Maverick’s expression turned sour at the sight of Reagan.
He seemed surprised to see her here.
“What are you doing here? Didn’t I find you a place and tell you not to come here unless necessary?”
You know I get scared being alone. Since Stephanie has divorced you, why can’t I move in? Maverick, I’m your girlfriend now, aren’t I?”
Reagan and Maverick started arguing. I had no interest in their quarrel and went straight upstairs.
The room that used to belong to Maverick and me was now filled with unfamiliar items.
The air was thick with the scent of lilies.
I recognized the fragrance–it was the perfume Maverick had given Reagan for her birthday one year.
Because Reagan, loved lilies, Maverick had the perfume custom–made.
This one–of–a–kind perfume was Reagan’s alone.
The heavy scent permeated every corner of the room.
I scanned the surroundings and saw all my belongings were gone.
She was really in a hurry. We had been divorced for only a few days, yet she had already moved all her belongings in.
