I had no interest in what was going on between James and Isabella.
After the drama ended, I quietly slipped back into Jax’s room.
When I got the blood test results, I was stunned.
“She gave you this stuff?!”
This illegal substance not only caused extreme weakness but also had severe long–term side effects.
No wonder he had disappeared for so long in our past life. He had been seeking medical treatment.
Thankfully, the doctor had been timely last night, and there were
irreversible
Consequences.
Jax heard my shocked outcry but didn’t react much.

He just sat quietly on the bed, staring out the window.
The air of helplessness and despair radiating from him made my heart ache.
It wasn’t until Jax looked at me, his ears bright red, that I realized I had been staring impolitely.
Before I could apologize, he spoke first.
He held cut a credit card to me.
“Thanks for yesterday. This is for you.”
“Can you… keep this a secret for me?”
I glanced at the report, puzzled. He was going to be fine.
But I nodded anyway. “Sure, but…”
I felt a little embarrassed as I pushed the card back toward him. What I was about to say felt a bit like taking advantage of the
situation.
“I’ll keep your secret… if you’ll be my boyfriend.”
The words were barely out of my mouth before Jax nearly leaped off the bed.
He stared at me, his bright eyes wide with disbelief, and pointed at himself.
“You like me?!”
I panicked. In this moment, yes, I did like him.
But he didn’t like me.
I quickly waved my hands, afraid he would get the wrong idea.

“No, no! I meant, I need your help.”
“Pretend to be my boyfriend. Help me move out of the Stanton house.”
“Can you?”
The light in Jax’s eyes dimmed. He muttered something under his breath.
“Knew you’d never like me.”
His voice was so quiet, and we were standing far apart.
I thought I might have misheard him.
When I asked him what he’d said, he quickly regained his composure, leaning back against the headboard with an all–knowing look.
“Sure.”
“You want to use me to get back at James, right?”
I looked at Jax, all the persuasive arguments I had prepared vanishing from my mind.
I hadn’t expected him to agree so readily.
After all, besides being high school classmates, we had barely interacted.
In high school, Jax and I were the two extremes of our class.
Extremely quiet, and at extreme distances.

I can’t pinpoint exactly when I started liking him in my past life.
I sat in the front row, closest to the teacher’s desk. He sat in the back ro
closest to the back door.
Maybe it was the time he was late for class, right as the teacher was praising him for his rapid improvement.
He acted nonchalant on the surface.

after being complimented.
For the first time, I saw him as a real, living person, not just the rebellious facade he
presented.
He was a good kid, secretly studying hard.
Maybe that was when I became curious about him.
Every time I smiled, I would subconsciously glance his way.
And sometimes, our eyes would meet, before I would calmly look away.
Lost in memories, I spaced out for a moment.
Jax waved a hand in front of my face.
“What’s
wrong? Can’t bear to see James upset?”
I looked up at him, now kneeling on the bed, his upper body leaning slightly toward me.
The usual playful arrogance in his eyes was gone, replaced by sincerity.
I sighed internally.
Of course. Jax and James were mortal enemies.

Chapter 2
He didn’t care if I liked him or not; he only cared if James was miserable.
So, I met his gaze and replied seriously.
“Of course I can bear it.”
“It’s a deal then, boyfriend. Pleasure doing business with you.”
As I spoke, I took his hand and placed the card back in it.
I couldn’t accept payment for nothing. We were, for now, just using each other.
He would help me leave the Stantons, and I would help him annoy James.
But I didn’t expect him to snatch his gaze away the moment our eyes met.
He didn’t take the card.
The instant my fingers touched his, Jax flinched as if electrocuted. He shot up from the bed, rambling.
“Since you’re my girlfriend now, you have to spend my money.”
“You go change your clothes right now. Anything related to James, throw it all out!”
1 looked down at my clothes.
He was right. It was time for a change.
I smiled at Jax, who was now looking here but at me.
“Okay. Whatever my boyfriend says.”
Perhaps it was the prospect of a new life, but my smile was genuine and bright.
Jax seemed to be infected by my happiness and smiled back.
Just then, the butler knocked and entered, and I tactfully excused myself.
As I closed the door, I heard the butler’s voice, a mixture of anger and concern.
Young Master, how do you plan to handle this matter?”
I thought about Isabella’s fate in my past life.
I silently closed the door and walked away.
There was nothing to pity. When people do wrong, they must pay the price.
I just wondered if the reborn James would plead for mercy on Isabella’s behal
