The words were barely out of my mouth before Jax nearly leaped off the bed.
He stared at me, his bright eyes wide with disbelief, and pointed at himself.
“You like me?!”
I panicked. In this moment, yes, I did like him.
But he didn’t like me.
I quickly waved my hands, afraid he would get the wrong idea.

The light in Jax’s eyes dimmed. He muttered something under his breath.
“Knew you’d never like me.”
His voice was so quiet, and we were standing far apart.
I thought I might have misheard him.
When I asked him what he’d said, he quickly regained his composure, leaning back against the headboard with an all–knowing look.

“You want to use me to get back at James, right?”
I looked at Jax, all the persuasive arguments I had prepared vanishing from my mind.
I hadn’t expected him to agree so readily.
After all, besides being high school classmates, we had barely interacted.

He didn’t care if I liked him or not; he only cared if James was miserable.
So, I met his gaze and replied seriously.
“Of course I can bear it.”
“It’s a deal then, boyfriend. Pleasure doing business with you.”
As I spoke, I took his hand and placed the card back in it.
I couldn’t accept payment for nothing. We were, for now, just using each other.
He would help me leave the Stantons, and I would help him annoy James.
But I didn’t expect him to snatch his gaze away the moment our eyes met.

The instant my fingers touched his, Jax flinched as if electrocuted. He shot up from the bed, rambling.

“You go change your clothes right now. Anything related to James, throw it all out!”
