Chapter 10%
I couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.}
After attending the Youth Literary Innovators Forum, it was already well into the night by the time I was heading home.
The entire neighborhood had a large–scale power outage and even the security cameras at the entrance were down.
I was holding a flashlight, preparing to take out my keys and open the door, when I suddenly felt a cold chill on my neck, making me shiver uncontrollably.”
Kimberly’s voice, as eerie as a ghost’s whisper, exploded in my ear.”
“Open the door.“}
My hands trembled from the tension, but I forced myself to stay calm and open the door. The house was eerily quiet, with only the sound of our breathing in the still night.”
“Ruth, are you happy to see me? I’m very happy to see you,” she sneered, a mischievous smile playing on her lips.}
“I’ve been waiting for you here for so long. I cut off the entire building’s power and the signal jammer is already running. Let’s see who’s coming to save you.”
.”@
I froze, completely taken aback. I never imagined she could be so thorough. She even thought to use a signal jammer.>
“Do you want money? I can give you all of it, just let me go,” I said, my voice trembling. I tried to turn and reason with her, but a sharp knife cut across my arm and drops of blood fell to the floor.
“don’t give a damn about your petty money! What do you think you are? Just some unwanted stray child and yet you dare to ride on my Back! What gives you the right?“}
I clenched my jaw, biting back the urge to retort as I let her insults wash over me. All I wanted was one answer–did she ever really consider me a friend? That was all.
“You’re so naive. Being around you makes me look kind–hearted and beautiful. Do you really think you’re anything more than that?”
“Let me make it clear. From the moment my family adopted you, you were always just going to be my family’s dog. And a good dog stays by its owner’s side.“}
With that, I felt no need for hesitation.
A cold smirk curled on my lips in the darkness as I clapped my hands. The next moment, the sound of rushing wind hit my ears, followed by Kimberly’s scream. I pushed her hand away and ran, the lights in the room flashing on instantly. In the corner, a sniper was crouching, poised and ready to take aim at her.
‘Fuck! Ruth, you set me up!“2
She collapsed in pain, her expression twisted with agony. My gaze was cold and merciless as I surveyed the scene, looking at the person I once called a close friend.
I knew she would come for revenge, so I had already requested protection from my superiors. The moment I learned the entire building had lost power, the sniper had already taken position at my home.
Talking to her was just a way to lower her guard. With one command, I could have her shot dead in an instant. But to my surprise, it wasn’t a buliet- it was a tranquilizer.
‘I never imagined you were this devious. I’ll hate you for the rest of my life! Once I’m out of prison, I’ll kill you. I’ll make your life miserable!”
The entire building lit up and she was dragged away, screaming. I stood there, my heart pounding, still shaken.}
I contacted the lawyer who had helped me win my previous two cases, hoping he could help me with this one as well, at the very least to ensure Kimberly was sent to prison.
Meanwhile, for safety’s sake, I quickly made plans, found a peaceful place to stay and booked a flight.
If I couldn’t fight her, I could at least escape.
Kimberly’s crime was attempted harm and her sentence wasn’t long–only two and a half years.
By the time I learned the verdict, I was already on a plane abroad, leaving the one I had been in behind. From this moment on, I would live off my royalties and start a new life.
(The End)
