Chapter 4
“Ms. Jennings, you need to serve tea to Mrs. Wright on your knees.”
A maid shoved a scalding cup into my hands.
The second my fingers touched it, I flinched. The cup shattered on the floor.
“Stella, haven’t you learned to respect your elders?!” Connor snapped.
I kept my head down, rubbed my burned fingers, and shook my head.
“I will only serve tea to my parents–in–law. You don’t want to marry me, right? I don’t want to marry you either.”
After I spoke, I tried to get up, but two bodyguards grabbed my arms from each side.
I struggled hard. “What are you trying to do? I’m the heiress of the Jennings family! How dare you treat me like this?”
Leah, fuming, strode forward and slapped me.
That slap hit me like the dozen she gave me in my past life. I froze instantly.
“Tomorrow is the engagement party, and you’re still so brazen!
“Connor, look at the wife you’re about to marry. No respect for elders, no manners!”
Connor didn’t even look at me.
“She kept pestering me to marry her. Otherwise, I would have married

Nina.”
Tears started streaming down Nina’s face again. “Connor, I’ve always dreamed of marrying you, but my family is too lowly and lacks the power to offend the Jennings family.”
She broke down crying harder, which made Connor feel even more sorry
for her.
He stepped forward with a cold, towering glare.
“Stella, didn’t you say you’d do anything to marry me?
“Fine. You have to promise you won’t interfere with any of my decisions after the wedding. You can’t go back to the Jennings‘ residence. You must stay with us to care for my parents, me, and Nina.”
A servant brought a prenuptial agreement, boldly stating “50% of Jennings family assets as an engagement gift.”
I clenched my fingers, refusing to sign, eyes red as I looked up.
“Connor! I’m not marrying you.”
Leah seized the chance and slapped me again.
“What kind of prestigious family are your family, if they raise a rebellious daughter who disrespects her husband?
“Today, I’ll teach you a lesson for your parents, so you won’t disgrace our family after marriage!”
That day, I lost count of how many slaps I took and how many
fingerprints they forced me to press.
When they finally let me go, they demanded I wear a black dress
tomorrow.

Because Leah and Nina would wear red.
But all I felt was how ridiculous it was.

At the engagement party the next day, I wore the new bright red dress.
My parents and the Collins family chatted inside while I greeted guests by
the door.
Just before noon, the Wright family arrived, surrounded by a crowd.
His family was dressed flashily, with Nina arm–in–arm with Connor–one in red and one in black–looking like they were the ones getting engaged.
Usually, Bob would be bowing and nodding to everyone at events like
this.
But today, he held his head high, looking down on everyone like he was the most important person at the engagement.
Seeing me still in red, Leah’s face immediately darkened.
“Where are your parents? I want to ask how your family could be so disrespectful!”
But since the guests were all important people, I didn’t want to cause any
trouble.
“My parents are inside. You can go in―”
Before I finished, Leah poked my right shoulder with her rough finger.
“Let them come out to see me!”
I frowned and dodged, catching Connor’s indifferent expression as he walked over.

He stood beside me, clearly ready to help greet the guests.
“Stella, you got what you wanted. Happy now?
“But don’t get cocky. You have me, but you’ll never have my heart.”

His voice was full of hatred, as if I and my family had ruined his future.
“Connor, I think you’re misunderstanding. Actually, today I—”
“You ignored me? Have you forgotten how you begged me on your knees yesterday?”
Leah’s voice rose as she tapped her phone and played the video of me on my knees yesterday.
The guests were shocked, some even started recording with their phones.
Reporters outside noticed too. They broke through security and rushed in.
“Ms. Jennings, is your future mother–in–law already showing you who’s the boss?”
“Do you drop to your knees mean you’ve submitted to your parents–in- law? Does this mean the Jennings family will bow to the Wright family?”
I gasped, signaling the bodyguards while grabbing Connor’s arm.
“Tell your mom to turn off that video, now!”
He pulled his arm away, coldly looking down to fix his tie.
“If this teaches you to respect your parents–in–law, then humiliating you isn’t a bad thing.”
“Connor, your whole family is unreasonable!

“You’re the one begging to marry me. What right do you have to judge my family?”
I’d had enough. I grabbed a thermos from the table, ready to smash it.
But a hand gently caught my wrist.
I turned to see Matt, dressed in white, his calm eyes sharp and fierce.
“Mr. Wright, how dare your mother demand my fiancée to get on her knees?”
