Damon and I stood on the Dragon Clan’s altar. The place was deserted, only the whistling wind whipping through my hair, sending a shiver down my spine. Damon’s expression was twisted with a manic glee. At his side lay the King’s crown and the High Priest’s scepter. He was ready.

I looked at him, weary. “Are you sure you want to bypass the King and receive the heavenly inheritance without the blessing of the people?”
Damon laughed, a wild, unhinged sound. “Yes! I may not be the prince, but you are of the true royal bloodline of the Phoenix Clan! So what if I don’t have the people’s approval? Once I am King, it will be a done deal. With the demons invading and my father old and weak, they will have no choice but to rely on me. In the end, all those who dared to defy me will be on their knees, respectfully calling me King!”
