*Samantha, who invited you? Your visits aren’t necessary, Rose remarked, casting a disdainful glance before turning away.
Amusement flickered within Alana as Samantha faced the chilly reception.
“Grandma, what did I do? Why are you being like this to me?” Samantha’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment as she whispered, feeling the gaze of others upon her.
Rose’s emotions stirred, her trembling finger pointed accusingly. “What do you mean what did you do? Your actions drove Celia away, and she’s still missing.”
Alana’s heart ached; she hadn’t realized her past would wound this kind old lady
“Rose, it’s been years. Dwelling on the past isn’t healthy. Samantha didn’t mean harm, there were reasons, Jennie consoled gently pulling at Rose’s sleeve.
Alana detected Jennie’s support for Samantha beneath the words.
Is it possible that Samantha had earned the mother’s favor instead of the old lady’s after marrying into the Channing family?
Guess it’s true that birds of a feather flock together.
“Yeah, Grandma, you’ve always favored Celia over me. I’ve been unhappy too. If I knew this would happen, I wouldn’t have pursued Shane. Samantha’s eyes teared up, her face etched with grievances
Alana felt nauseated by Samantha’s insincerity; she yearned to leave.
Straightening up. Alana grabbed the medical kit. Today’s treatment ends here. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
“Have a meal before you go, Rose suggested warmly, her mood shifting quickly.
“No, thanks. I have other plans, Alana declined, but her eyes fell on a white medicine bottle on the coffee table. She turned to Jennie. “Is that something the old lady usually takes?”
“Yeah, Jennie confirmed.
“Mind if I take a look?” Alana inquired, and after a brief pause, Jennie passed her the bottle.
Inspecting the bottle, Alana advised, “The old lady shouldn’t take this medicine during her treatment.”
A long sigh escaped Jennie’s lips. “Got it.”
Before Alana could move, Simon, the housekeeper, intercepted her. Dr. Walters, our young master wants to speak with you in person. He’ll be here soon.
Alana hesitated, not keen on the idea, but before she could decline, her phone buzzed–it was Jeff.
“Ms. Walters, we’ve got a problem. Rowan’s gone, the voice on the phone sounded frantic as soon as it connected.
“How did this happen? When did it happen?” Alana’s head spun, her heart pounding with panic.
Jeff’s voice dripped with apology and guilt. Im not sure when. I went to call them for a snack, and one was missing. I’m really
sorry. Ms. Walters. It’s my fault for not keeping a closer eye”
“Okay, don’t blame yourself. I’ll be there soon.” Alana tried to steady her nerves and regain control.
Once the call ended, Alana bid farewell to Rose once more. She reached into her bag, retrieved a pen and paper, and quickly jotted down her phone number to give to Simon.
“Sorry, Simon, but I’ve got an urgent matter and can’t wait for Mr. Channing. Here’s my contact info. If he needs updates on the old lady’s condition, tell him to reach out to me.
