“I am sorry for the inconvenience, I didn’t know you were affiliated with such influential people.” Mr. Patrick said with a huge smile plastered across his face. It was almost as if he wasn’t bellowing at us some few minutes ago. My eyes narrowed at the false concern in his voice. “With the amount your friend deposited, you could stay here for an extra two years.”
“He really sent you that much money?” Cordelia asked curiously, her eyes shining like gold coins. “Are you sure the amount is accurate?”
“I already confirmed with my bank.” Mr. Patrick testified and hung onto me tighter in disbelief. “How did you know that guy, Chelsea?” she asked me.
“I will explain later,” I muttered and Mr. Patrick handed me the key to the apartment, the men who had thrown out our luggage were back at work, taking them back in one after the other, while Kai stood in front of the entrance his eyes narrowed as he supervised the men. “Cordelia, could you help these men in moving our things back inside the house?”
“Yes, sure.” She answered as she collected the key from me.
Hesitantly, I walked back to the entrance, where Kai stood, with his hands in his pocket casually looking at them. His eyes scanned what my apartment looked like, and his eyes were narrowed. Unsatisfied.
“Mr. Hezron…” I started in a small unsure voice, his eyes lazily turned towards me.
“Um, Miss Findley.” He mouthed tilting his head to the side, and I bit down on my lips a little nervous and angry.
“Can I have a word with you, in private?” I requested, he paused for a while, the edge of his lips lifted slightly in a smirk and I bit down on my lips.
“Sure….” He said walking off first, and I turned on my heels, following him towards the stairs, heading towards his car. “I am starting to regret paying so much for garbage like that. How do you even stay in such a cramped place?”
I remained quiet until we got to his car.
“So, what is it?” He inquired turning towards me with a smug expression as he leaned against the car. He began twirling the car keys in his fingers. “I am sure you didn’t call me out to say nothing.”
“I never asked you to help me.” I started as soon as I found my voice, for some reason, I felt even more embarrassed that he helped me than when the landlord publicly disgraced me. Anger crawled into me, and a strong bitterness remained behind my throat. “I never asked you to pay for my rent, I was doing just fine trying to convince him.”
“And then what?” He didn’t seem fazed by my loud voice, he remained calm with a face now void of any emotions. “That didn’t look like a man who was ready to compromise. No matter what you said or did, he would have thrown you out.”
I clenched my jaw and fist, feeling anger rise to my chest.
“But going out of your way to pay that much money when no one even asked you to,” I felt my frustration boiling over, wasn’t it enough that I was a bad person for picking on him when we were younger and now I am indebted to him? Making me the villain all over again! I had been grappling at the straws of my life, trying to put everything in place and make it up to him but how could I do that now? With my guilt mounting, I was about to explode from anger. “What exactly do you think you will gain from flaunting your wealth in my face? Am I supposed to beg you or something?”
“You have so much pride for someone who has nothing.” He noted, tears burning in my eyes I glared at him.
“I know that very well, I don’t need someone like you to remind me about it!”
“If you’re so mad I didn’t let the landlord throw you out, then you can always pay me back.” He snapped, making me jolt. “If someone does something for you, it’s only natural you say thank you. You should try to appreciate it and not be a bitch

about it. And you have to make peace with the fact that things won’t always go your way?
“What?” I whispered back tears filling my eyes.
“Yes, since you believe there is something I want then yes, I do want something from you.” He closed up the distance between us, making me almost stumble backward, I was feeling a little lightheaded from the lack of sleep, so he caught me before I could fall off
“What do you want?” I whispered. “Tell me.”
“It’s no fun if I told you. If you’re eager to pay me back then you should figure out what I want.” He steadied me on my feet. He opened the door and hopped into his car, the windows wounding down. “You should get some sleep, I need you in my house 6A.M sharp.”
“It’s not a joke, Chelsea,” Cordelia yelled as she raced towards me. She pulled me into a hug, before displaying the small paper in her hands, “The landlord gave me a receipt. We are cleared from our debt.”
I nodded softly at her, trying my best to maintain the forced smile.
I took off my shoes and went further into the room.
“What is it?” her eyes narrowed as she noticed something was wrong, I simply shook my head as I pulled my hair in a ponytail.
“I am just tired.”
“Who was that man?” She asked curiously as she grabbed my arms. “The man who paid the bills, you guys seemed affiliated, is that your boyfriend?”
“Hell no!” I spat out reflexively, the bitter words sinking in me, there was no way a man like that would date a woman like me. If there was anything between Kai and me, it was the needful drive to get his revenge on me.
“He is my boss,” I answered.
“Your boss?” she seemed surprised, and then I remembered I hadn’t told her yet.
“Yes, I got a job, so we don’t have to worry so much anymore,” I assured her. “I can finally take care of you.”
“I should have thanked him for helping us.” Her eyebrows furrowed together regretfully.
“No, there isn’t any need for that; I would pay him back,” I reassured her again, the determination in my voice was fueled by my bruised ego. But now, I was wondering how to figure out what he wanted from me.
How do I get him off my back?
What the hell could he want for him to pay such money?
