Michael didn’t come home that night.
A clear message of anger.
The next morning, I left the baby with the
nanny and headed straight to the office.
Employees glanced at me, surprised, and then
quickly dipped their heads.
“Mrs. Sterling! Shouldn’t you be at home,
resting?”
The young receptionist hurried over, all
concerned.
“Just checking on things.
I gave her a curt nod and headed for the
executive floor.
As the elevator doors opened, I heard
laughter coming from Michael’s office.
Peeking through the crack in the door, I saw
Becky White sitting beside him.
He was smiling, a genuine, warm smile that I
hadn’t seen directed at anyone but me in
years.
<
Usually, he wouldn’t let anyone linger in his
office, let alone treat them with such
tenderness.
But there she was, practically glued to his
side.
And Becky was wearing a designer suit.
The one I’d been eyeing, the one Michael had
promised to buy for me.
It wasn’t just expensive, it was limited edition,
one of only five in the world.
And it was on an intern.
I pushed the door open, and the laughter
stopped dead.
Г
Michael’s smile vanished.
“What are you doing here?”
Becky jumped up, all wide–eyed innocence,
and chirped, “Good morning, Mrs. Sterling!
You look amazing after having a baby. They
say it changes your body, but you’ve bounced
right back!”
I let out a sarcastic laugh. “Who asked for
your opinion? Which idiot hired this girl?”
Becky’s smile froze on her face.
“Take off the suit. Now.”
The temperature in the room plummeted.
Becky’s eyes widened, her lips trembling. She

I turned to Michael, my gaze sharp as a knife.
“Care to explain why she’s wearing my
clothes?”
Michael frowned, annoyed. “It’s just a suit,
Susan. After what happened with the office
yesterday, I thought Becky deserved a little
compensation.”
“I’ll buy you something even better.”
“Compensation?” I scoffed. “This suit is a
limited edition, for crying out loud. What
makes you think she’s entitled to wear it?”
“The drama yesterday was her fault. She
didn’t know her place.”
L
“And did you forget who you are? Who let you
give my things away?”
Becky paled, tears welling up in her eyes. “I’m
so sorry, Mrs. Sterling. I didn’t know it was
yours…”
“Now you know. Take it off.”
Michael snapped.
“Susan! Don’t be ridiculous! We have a
meeting to get to. Stop making a scene.”
My heart sank.
He never raised his voice to me in the office,
but he was doing it for her.
Becky visibly relaxed, seeing Michael come to
く
“A meeting? With whom?”
“The A Group. Becky’s been a big help on this
project, so I’m taking her along.”
Michael loosened his tie, his tone impatient.
“Let’s go, Becky. We don’t have time for this.”
As they walked past me, Becky gave me a
smug smile, her eyes full of spite.
He just signed his death warrant.
If Michael wanted to defend Becky, then he
would pay the price.
After they left, I pulled out my phone and
dialed the CEO of A Group.
“Mr. Anderson, it’s Susan Sterling.”
“About that deal Michael Sterling is about to
discuss…”
