Chapter 24 She’s Almost Been Swayed
It seemed as though she believed Ryan had feelings for her.
Katie held her phone, recalling the online lover she had in her previous life.

To be more precise, it was a secret crush since she had never confessed, and the other person had never expressed any feelings toward her.
That individual’s presence in her bleak and sorrowful life was like a soft glow of light, quietly offering her warmth.
This feeling reminded her of Ryan.
Yet, she could never be certain if he was the same person she had known in her previous life.
Ryan’s slender fingers twitched slightly as he said, “Do I need an excuse to step in when I see something unjust? If I saw an elderly woman crossing the street, I would assist her too.”
Katie gave a small smile, but there was a trace of disappointment in her heart.
Feigning nonchalance, she said, “After I finish my college entrance exams, I will leave the Maddisons for good.”

After ending the call, Katie enjoyed a refreshing shower, completed a set of previous exam papers, and went to bed.
The final mock exam was approaching soon.
This time, she genuinely wanted to measure how much progress she had made and whether Thalindor University was within her reach.
If she could secure a spot in the school’s top ten rankings, there might be hope.
The following morning, Katie went to school like she always did.
Sally walked over with a bowl of plain soup and set it down beside Eddie. “Eddie, Bertram mentioned that your stomach hasn’t been well, so I made this soup especially for you. It should help you feel better,” she said.
She intentionally displayed the burn on her hand.
Noticing the injury, Eddie’s expression softened. “You’re hurt. You shouldn’t be doing this kind of work in the future, leave it to the servants.
“Eddie, you’ve done so much for our family. It’s only fair that I take care of small things like this,” Sally replied with a sweet smile, her expression pure and innocent.
Eddie felt a wave of relief and instinctively glanced at Katie. Surely, she finally realized my stomach was bothering me, right?
However, when Katie’s eyes landed on the soup, a trace of mockery flickered in them.
As expected, the soup though late, had finally arrived!
Lacking any appetite, she rose to her feet and left without uttering a word.
Eddie felt a sense of emptiness.
Bad Katie really not said a single word, or did she simply not care about him at all?
Quickly, Sally chimed in, “Eddie, Katie is actually concerned about you. She’s just being stubborn this time.”
I hope that’s the case, he sighed.
Eddie also wished that Katie was just being difficult. He didn’t believe she would sever ties with the family over something so small.
Without her attention, he couldn’t shake the discomfort that lingered.

Once Sally had gotten what she wanted, she left for school.

Bertram leaned in and murmured, “Mr. Eddie, Ms. Katie didn’t even bother to ask about your condition. That’s really too much.”
Eddie’s mood lifted slightly when he saw the soup.
Thankfully, Sally was so considerate.
He took a sip of the soup, only for his stomach to worsen instead of feeling better.
He suddenly scowled, recalling the nutritious dishes prepared by Katie, which always helped ease the pain when consumed.
Without thinking, he spoke up, “Tell the kitchen to prepare a nutritious dish similar to the one Katie used to make.”
Bertram hesitated slightly. “Ms. Katie always personally makes the nutritious dish.”
“Is it really that hard to make just one?” he shot back, his tone sharp from the pain.
The maid standing nearby explained, “Mr. Eddie, I heard that Ms. Katie needs to prepare the rice for that dish the day before. She has to wake up very early to gather all the fresh ingredients, and the cooking process has to be timed perfectly. Even a small mistake could ruin it.
“The recipe was passed down to her by an elderly alternative medicine doctor. We don’t know how to make it, so Ms. Katie has been the one preparing it all these years.”
After hearing this, Eddie felt even more unsettled for some reason.
He placed his hand over his face, realizing just how much she had given up for him.
He had never understood it before, thinking that the nutritious dishes were simple.
He began to feel some regret, realizing how much he had overlooked Katie in the past, not even understanding the extent of her silent sacrifices.
As her brother, it was his fault.
Katie wasn’t being stubborn. She had simply endured too many injustices.
She had been hurt!
Eddie turned to Bertram and said, “Go and bring me the gifts Katie gave to Sally last time as an apology.”
Bertram seemed a bit taken aback, “Wasn’t that the apology Ms. Katie gave to Ms. Sally? If you return them, wouldn’t it seem unfair to Ms. Sally? She already feels uneasy staying with the Maddisons, and if you continue this way, will she still have her place here?
“Mr. Eddie, you can’t just let his feelings change because of one meal. Ms. Sally made the soup for you and even got hurt in the process.
After thinking for a moment, Eddie recalled how Sally had been injured earlier, and he felt a pang of sympathy.
He sighed and said, “Forget it, just bring back the gift I gave her, and don’t do anything else for now.”
At the very least, he needed to make some changes.
That evening, after Katie returned, she locked herself in her room and stayed there.
A short time later, there was a knock on the door, followed by Eddie’s voice, “Katie, it’s me.”
Katie walked over and opened the door, her face neutral. “What’s the matter?”
“This is for you,” he said, holding out the item.
Katie noticed a box containing a Verdant Necklace, which seemed oddly familiar.

Eddie’s voice was full of remorse, “Katie, I know I’ve wronged you before, so I brought the necklace back. I’ll get a new one for Sally to make up for it, but this one is special for you. You shouldn’t have to give it to anyone else.”
He had spent the entire day regretting his actions. He shouldn’t have done what he did at the banquet.
He hadn’t thought things through properly.
Katie was slightly confused.
She never imagined he would return the necklace!
How odd!
In her previous life, she never got these back before she passed away.
Katie lowered her eyes and replied calmly, “There’s no need. Once something has been given, there’s no reason to take it back.”
“Katie, please take it. If you don’t, I won’t feel right. Think of it as my way of making up to you, alright?”

Katie noticed Sally standing in through the corner of her eye. She deliberately raised her voice, “Eddie, I have to point something out. I gave this gift to Sally out of my own will. How can you just take it back like that? Isn’t this going to hurt her feelings? Isn’t it, Sally?”
When Eddie turned to look at Sally, he immediately felt a pang of guilt.
He hadn’t asked Sally for her permission.
Sally gathered her courage and stepped forward, saying, “Katie, actually those gifts were just temporarily with me. I’m happy to return them to their rightful owner. I don’t think I deserve such expensive gifts. I’ve always been aware of my place.”
Her voice was full of sincerity.
But once she finished speaking, she quickly turned and walked away, wiping away a tear, her face full of sorrow.
Eddie felt uneasy. “Sally?”
Katie leaned against the door. “Eddie, you should go and comfort her.”
Eddie pressed his lips together. “Katie, I just apologized to you from the heart, but why did you say those things to hurt her?
“I may have been unfair to you, but Sally did nothing wrong! Her dad saved your life, don’t forget that!”
Katie let out a small, cold smile.
As expected, nothing had changed.
She had almost been swayed just moments ago.
