Chapter 11
“What happened to him?!” my voice bellowed the moment I entered my son’s hospital room.
I saw Beverly holding Lorde’s hand, crying as if she was the one in pain. But instead of feeling a strange joy from seeing her there, instead of feeling that familiar warmth that reminded me of Chesca, all I felt was irritation.
Maybe if Hestia’s not making me stressed, I won’t be pissed at her face.N
“Didn’t I tell you to take care of him?” I said sharply.
She looked at me with swollen eyes, red nose, and trembling lips, clearly crying for hours. Still, I felt no guilt. I only asked her to take care of him. It was easier than court work, yet she failed.
“Lucian, he wanted to cook himself. I only stepped out to answer a phone call. I do not know how he found and consumed the poison,” she explained.
I pushed her aside and touched Lorde’s forehead, burning hot. His lips were pale, eyes sunken. He looked just like Hestia did when she was hospitalized for poisoning.
I let out a deep breath.§
Poison.
I turned to Beverly. “Why is there poison in my house?“>
Then I remembered what Hestia once said, she saw Beverly with a maid, talking about sneaking poison into the house for Lorde, I hadn’t believed her. My gamma would never harm the future alpha. But why did we even have poison? No pests, no rats. Unless it wasn’t meant for animals.
“Tell me the truth,” I began, my voice laced with threat. Her eyes widened in fear. She thought I would punish her right then and there. But not yet.”
“Is it true what Hestia said before? That you had something to do with the poison getting into my house?“}
I saw the shock and panic cross her gentle face.
“N–no…” she shook her head and avoided my eyes. “Why would I do that, Lucian? I am your gamma. You trust me,” she said.
I sighed deeply, my jaw clenching in anger.
Then who else could it be?
“Have you ever considered that maybe it was Hestia? Maybe she planned this, so she could finally leave you,” she said.
I was already about to turn around to speak to the doctor, but her words stopped me.]
“What did you say?” I asked, my voice rising.
My blood pressure spiked. Hestia had been difficult lately, causing the worst headache of my life. But I never imagined she’d risk her life to stir drama, let alone expose our son to poison. No, she wasn’t like that.”
Beverly seemed to sense the change in my tone. She sighed and fidgeted with her hands, the same way my late wife Chesca used to.
“Well, who else could have brought poison into the house? Hestia has the power to move freely in your home, Lucian. And after she came back from the hospital, she did not wait. She started her drama again. And when you pushed her away, what did she do? She left. As if she could not wait to be gone,” she said, shaking her head in disappointment.
My jaw tightened. My vision darkened as her words stacked on top of one another. I still refused to believe her. But then she moved closer and added more fuel to the fire.
“And now there is news about her seeing another man. Not just any man, but one who also has a son. Someone she often meets. Do you not think it all makes sense now?“>
“Get out,” I said tightly.
Even though I said it calmly, her body flinched. But she did not argue. She turned and quietly walked away.!!
“I will get the doctor,” she said under her breath before stepping out.
I sat heavily in the chair beside Lorde and took his hand. It was cold.
My son had already been through so much trauma. He lost Chesca while he was still a baby. At three years old, he witnessed someone trying to break into the house during a thunderstorm to hurt his mother. Since then, every time it rained and thundered, he would panic. He would scream for her. He would lash out.”
And now this.
“Mr. Ducani,” the doctor spoke behind me. I did not look at him. “It is a good thing your son is safe now. But we must be careful. He should avoid food that contains high levels of toxins. He should not take too many medicines either. It may trigger the areas that were affected by the poison. His heart has been weak since birth, correct?”
That was the reason Hestia had always been so careful. She never let him cry too much. She avoided giving him sweets. She did not allow him to participate in any activity that could exhaust him. She knew how fragile he was.
Even though Lorde was not her biological son, she was the one who raised him.”
There was no way I could believe she would put poison in our home and risk harming him.”
But maybe that poison was not for Lorde.
Maybe it was for her.”
If she was the one who brought it in, maybe she had no intention of staying. Maybe she really wanted to divorce me. Leave us. And

maybe she had a reason. Maybe she was already planning to be someone else’s wife. Someone else’s mother.
Just like the man she was seen with in the news.
