Chapter 9

Adam carried Anna into the car, but a strange tightness gripped his chest.

He couldn’t help glancing back toward the abandoned factory. It felt like something important had been left behind in

there.

Out of nowhere, an image flashed in his mind-the figure of the woman crawling toward him earlier. Her silhouette was

oddly familiar.

“Adam, what’s wrong?” Anna asked, unable to hold back when she saw the look on his face.

He quickly turned his eyes away, shaking his head.

He thought he was probably just overthinking it.

That woman was nothing but a bitch. There was no way he knew her!.

“Let’s go.” Adam said, starting the engine.

But the farther they drove from the factory, the more irritable he became.

He tugged at his tie instinctively, feeling suffocated.

Caught in his thoughts, he didn’t notice a car suddenly pulling out at the intersection.

“Adam, watch out!” Anna shouted, grabbing the steering wheel just in time to swerve them away from a collision.

Adam slammed on the brakes. The car screeched to a violent halt.

His heart was still pounding, and his brows furrowed tightly.

He’d never felt this unsettled before.

Chelsea’s face kept flashing before his eyes, unshakable.

As he thought about how he had just abandoned her in the cemetery, regret surged in his chest, along with a pang of

guilt.

Maybe she was only acting out because he had been neglecting her lately. Maybe that was why she’d lashed out at Anna. Once Anna was feeling better, he would spend more time with Chelsea.

“Adam, are you thinking about Chelsea? You should go to her. I’ll get out here. I’m fine on my own.” Anna asked softly, her eyes reddening as she lowered them.

“I heard a new cake shop opened up nearby. Maybe buy her something sweet to cheer her up.”

Adam hesitated and his expression conflicted. “Let me take you home first. You’re so well-behaved, so I can’t just keep letting you suffer.”

“I’m not suffering. Taking care of the Luna is your duty.” Anna said understandingly, her voice gentle. “Just don’t let yourself get distracted while driving like that again, Adam. If something happened to you, Chelsea and I would both be

heartbroken.”

Adam pressed a soft kiss to her forehead in apology, then drove her home.

After carrying Anna home and coaxing her to sleep, Adam finally had a moment to himself.

He pulled out his phone and began typing to Chelsea:

“Babe, are you home? Anna had an accident and called me for help. I couldn’t just ignore her and stand by, so I brought

her to the hospital.”

“Chelsea, was it you who sent someone to hurt Anna? She saved your life. How could you do something like that to her?”

“Once she’s feeling better, I want you two to talk and clear up this misunderstanding. I don’t want something like this to

happen again.”

Message after message, each one he sent was laced with suspicion and warning. Adam didn’t even realize it himself, but his heart had already started leaning toward Anna.

There was no reply. A strange unease settled in his chest. But then he remembered how Chelsea had been lately-moody, irritable, always picking fights, refusing to answer his calls. As he recalled, his irritation flared up again.

He dialed her number. It rang until it cut off and no one picked up.

His mood soured even more. Was Chelsea seriously throwing a tantrum and giving him the silent treatment?

But she was the one who messed up, the one who arranged to have Anna hurt. And now how could she have the nerve to

be sulking?

Maybe he had spoiled her too much. She was getting too bold, acting recklessly without fear of consequence, thinking she could get away with anything and push his limits whenever she wanted.

But this time, she had gone too far.

He wouldn’t rush back to coddle her immediately like before. She needed to learn a lesson.

Adam put down his phone and returned to Anna’s room.

But as he looked at her pale face, for some reason, Chelsea’s face flashed before his eyes.

“Something’s wrong with our mate,” his wolf growled lowly inside him.

Those words echoed in his head. Thinking back, Adam realized Chelsea hadn’t looked well lately. Her complexion had been pale for some time now.

His heart sank.

It seemed there was something he was missing. But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t figure it out.

Had something happened to Chelsea?

He realized he couldn’t let things spiral any further.

He needed to go back and check on her.
