Chapter 5

When Chelsea woke again, she was already in the city’s Pack hospital. For a moment, she was dazed and disoriented.

She reached down to touch her now-flat belly and her heart clenched in pain.

The baby was gone.

“Chelsea Jerome? Where’s your next of kin? We still need someone to pay the remaining fees. You’re suffering from heavy metal poisoning, and the Pack detective team will need your cooperation for an investigation. Also… Your child didn’t make it.” came the nurse’s voice. When she saw Chelsea was awake, she asked her detailed questions about her condition.

Chelsea’s fingers trembled as she picked up her phone and dialed Adam’s number, only to see that it was switched off.

A bitter smile tugged at her lips. Since leaving the yacht last night, Adam hadn’t answered her calls, nor tried to reach her.

He used to say he’d come to her the moment she needed him. But now, he chose to stay with Anna instead of answering

her.

“No next of kin. I’ll pay the fees myself,” Chelsea replied weakly.

“You shouldn’t get out of bed. I’ll take care of it for you. You just rest,” the nurse offered gently, stopping her from moving.

As the nurse stepped out after making her notes, she couldn’t help but mutter to a colleague, “They’re all women, but how can fate be so cruel to some? One woman just had a threatened miscarriage and her mate went crazy, hurriedly booked the whole VIP floor, even flew in the top healers from all over the country to save her baby overnight.”

She glanced back toward Chelsea’s room. “But this poor she-wolf was poisoned and lost her baby, and not a single family

member showed up.”

Chelsea heard the nurse’s every word and knew exactly who they were talking about: Adam and Anna.

But she felt nothing anymore.

She transferred herself into a VIP ward and, during her stay, secretly had someone test the glass fragments from the

poisoned drink.

She needed to know who poisoned her.

Throughout her entire stay in the hospital, Adam never once contacted her.

When she was discharged, she went straight back to her parents’ house.

There, she retrieved her late mother’s ring and locked all sentimental belongings away in a permanent safety deposit box.

She planned to sell the house and never return.

Then, she changed her name, determined to disappear forever so Adam could never find her again.

When Chelsea returned to the pack house, she found Anna lounging on her sofa, wrapped in her blanket, munching on snacks while watching a drama.

Chelsea frowned at the sight. But before she could speak, Anna sprang up from the couch.

“Chelsea, you’re back!” she chirped with fake warmth. “Have you eaten yet? Adam went out to get cake. Do you want me to have him bring you a slice of chocolate?”

Her smile was smug, her eyes glinting with something unmistakably victorious.

“Who gave you permission to touch my things?” Chelsea’s face went cold as her gaze landed on the cluttered coffee table. A wave of irritation rose in her chest.

She had always hated people touching her belongings, hated even more when people messed up her home.

Adam knew this well, so he rarely brought anyone home. And if he did, he made sure everything was cleaned and

disinfected afterward in time.

But now, he was indulging Anna to lie on her spot, wrapped in her blanket, eating her snacks…

“Are you mad, Chelsea? Then I’ll give it back.” Anna smiled and tilted the bag of chips upside down, letting the crumbs scatter all over herself. She said with a raised brow, “Here, pick them up.”

Chelsea froze in disbelief. Just as she was about to speak, Anna knelt down with dramatic flair and began cleaning the

mess.

“I’m sorry, Chelsea. I was starving and fainting, so I ate your snacks. Don’t be mad, okay? I’ll clean everything up right now.” Anna’s eyes were red, tears threatening to fall.

“Honey, what are you two doing?”

Chelsea couldn’t process the sudden shift in short while. She didn’t realize what was happening until Adam’s voice

sounded behind her.

She turned just in time to see Adam looking down at Anna on the floor.

Chelsea didn’t miss it. In that split second, she caught the flicker of worry and tenderness in his gaze.

“I shouldn’t have touched Chelsea’s things without her permission,” Anna mumbled, lowering her head and sniffling softly

“Yeah, Chelsea hates it when anyone touches her stuff. And what’s with the mess in here?” Adam frowned. “Take your cake and leave. Don’t come here again.”

Anna froze. Slowly, she rose and reached for the cake he handed her.

But in the next instant, she seemed unsteady as she stood up, stumbling straight toward Chelsea.

Losing her balance, Anna fell backward along with Chelsea.

In that split second, Adam darted forward and caught Anna in his arms.

Chelsea was just near Anna but her body slammed hard against the floor. Her head hit the shoe cabinet with a sickening

thud.

The last thing she saw before everything went black was Adam tightly holding Anna.
