Chapter 12
I didn’t understand Derrick. The way he was acting, it seemed like the college entrance examination
was child’s play to him.
Today, no matter who comes, if they replace me, they will score over a hundred points in a single
subject. Their whole family will have to be grateful to me.
The environment and talents, if not cherished, would gradually be taken back.
Derrick clenched his teeth tightly and never let go.
Talking more is useless, I came just to put my mind at ease.
I got up and bid farewell, saying, “In the future, we won’t meet again in the rivers and lakes. I wish you a bright future.”
As I turned around, my wrist was grabbed, and I chuckled softly.
Looking back, Derrick asked gloomily, “Do you think the things we considered after the college
entrance examination still count?”
I was stunned.
In the end, Derrick finally calmed down, but he kept holding onto me, asking me several times to
promise to keep my word.
He also declared, “If you dare to say anything about the rivers and lakes disappearing again, I
will…”
“What were you?”
“I grabbed you and called the police!”
I laughed, “That was really scary.”
When we went back, Derrick had the driver take me home.
The weather was very hot, but the temperature inside the car was exceptionally comfortable.
The scorching sunlight shone through the glass, dividing the world into two seasons: the gentle and warm spring sunshine inside the car and the outside world.
When he arrived at my house downstairs, the driver confirmed once again.
“The navigation seems to have encountered a slight issue, is this the right place?”
I said yes, and the driver said, “That was really hard for you.”
I returned from a brief spring outing to the scorching summer. As the car door closed, I was also cut

off from the world outside.
After saying goodbye to the driver, I started walking back. The scorching sun was baking me like a
steamer, and after just two steps, I started feeling a bit dizzy.
I took a few quick steps and hid under the eaves, glancing fearfully at the bright sun.
Ah, the sun, it was quite cruel.
The college entrance examination questions are relatively easier compared to regular practice
exercises.
When I passed the French exam, I was even a little happy.
I have no difficulty in understanding the vocabulary of the reading comprehension, and I have even
done two of the passages before.
Derrick was taught the same question types in both cloze test and grammar fill–in–the–blanks.
As for the composition, I had once chosen a topic for Derrick to practice on, and I had even tried it
myself.
He scored over 120 points in French, so he was basically stable.
After all the subjects were finished, I finally let out a sigh of relief that I had been holding for three years, and I finally felt a little relaxed.
Several senior students from the same school started a training institution together and invited me to join as a partner during the summer vacation. The salary was generous.
I bought myself a phone and didn’t go back to school.
The release of the college entrance examination results was blocked, which was within my
expectations.
My grandmother, who has always been afraid of disturbing me, made an unprecedented phone call to me and said that the Howard family had called several times.
“It was a woman who said she had something very important to talk to you about.”
I hurriedly called Mrs. Howard back.
Derrick’s scores were surprisingly good. He got 132 in French, a perfect score in math, and a total
score of 649.
Mrs. Howard said that smoke was coming out of the ancestral grave, and she
gave me 132,000.
She said it was a bonus, exceeding the agreed amount by ten thousand.

But after exchanging a few pleasantries, she said she needed my help.
She arranged for Derrick to study abroad, but Derrick insisted on going with me.
When I said that my mother was not feeling well and that I had no intention of going abroad, Mrs. Howard visibly breathed a sigh of relief.
“But this child insisted on having you, so when we applied, we applied for yours together.”
“Anyway, it doesn’t conflict, so at that time you can just study directly at home, um… the offer will be invalidated, and he will go abroad.”
“If you agree, we’ll do it this way. And if he asks during this period, you can also help cover it up.”
I clenched my phone and listened to Mrs. Howard saying that Vivian would go with Derrick.
Even if they discovered they had been deceived, with someone accompanying them, they would
quickly adapt.
My knuckles turned white, and I instinctively wanted to refuse.
Mrs. Howard sighed repeatedly.
She knew that this matter troubled me, but deceiving, why can’t there be a second reason?
Wasn’t it also like this before?
“You see, we, Howard Company, just had a collaboration with the largest Recovery Center in Solara
City.”
“We, on the other hand, provided your mother with lifelong free service, where there were top–notch professionals, and there were many successful cases of vegetative recovery.‘
“You were studying over there, so it was convenient for visits…”
Case of Plant Man’s Recovery…
The sound in the phone gradually became elusive, and a sharp ringing seemed to echo in my ears, piercing through my brain and reaching my heart.
Tears the size of beans fell straight down, as I struggled to grip my phone, wanting to shout and curse, but not a single syllable could escape my lips.
I just realized that pretending to grow up and actually being a grown–up are always different.
Adults are truly remarkable. Even if they disguise themselves perfectly, they still see through your ulterior motives and win with just one move.
My heart was torn back and forth, I took a deep breath and then exhaled.

“That’s it then, thank you Auntie. If Derrick asks me, I will cooperate.”
I asked her to help deliver a recording to Vivian’s parents, adding, “If they can’t resolve it, when the media interviews, I will handle it in my own way.”
If it caused any loss to Harris Company, I can only apologize in advance if it evoked empathy from kind–hearted people.
Mrs. Howard realized the problem and quickly responded.
I hung up the phone, sent the recording over, and put the phone in my pocket. I tried to put it in a few times, but it didn’t work. My hand slipped and it fell to the ground.
Picking it up and taking a look, the screen was not covered with a protective film, and there was a crack that stretched from the upper right corner to the lower left corner, almost dividing the screen
into two halves.
The senior students gathered around.
Senior Walter Phillips frowned, “What’s the matter? Why do you look so pale?”
He looked serious and said, “Are your hands still trembling? Do you feel unwell?”
I covered my eyes with my palm, took a few deep breaths to calm down my emotions.
“The phone screen was broken.”
Everyone glanced at the phones on the table and let out a sigh of relief.
Walter helplessly said, “It’s not a big deal, the new machine has a one–year warranty, so stop crying.”
Senior student Sofia Rivera joked, “Back in the day, we used to seem aloof, but who would have thought there was a tender side to us.”
The argument ended, and then the cracked screen phone started ringing.
No note, but not an unfamiliar number.
It was Derrick.
