Chapter 4
Marcus suddenly intervened, causing the situation to become a mess.
A friendship of over ten years, the relationship took a sudden turn for the worse.
A person’s bet turned into a competition between two people.
Derrick stood guard outside our classroom during every break.
Leaning against the railing with a dictionary in hand, I lowered my head to glance at the words, then closed my eyes to silently memorize them, while muttering under my breath.
Just when I looked up, my gaze unintentionally swept over Marcus, before landing on me.
I felt a thorn in my back.
Marcus, on the other hand, took advantage of his “geographical advantage” and occupied most of my free time by constantly seeking advice.
He stood in front of the desk, blocking the people in the corridor firmly.
After the conversation, Marcus’s gaze lingered on my hands as I peeled the candy wrapper.
He said he wanted to take me to the amusement park and then go see a movie.
I knocked on the exercise book and pushed it to the corner of the desk, saying, “I’m busy.”
He didn’t give up and said he would bring me breakfast.
Bang-
A dictionary lay on my desk, and Derrick’s smiling face followed.
He snatched the candy from my hand and stuffed it into my mouth, then grinned at Marcus.
“How did you snatch my job, Marcus? Was I too good to you before?”
The lingering warmth of his fingertips remained on my lips, and I bit down on the candy, freezing for two seconds.
I furrowed my brow as I pushed the candy towards my cheek.
I gave Derrick two test papers and I issued eviction orders to both of them at the same time.
“No need for anyone to come along, I’ll go to the cafeteria by myself.”

The war didn’t ignite and Marcus returned to his seat, while Derrick continued to lean against the classroom wall, reciting from the dictionary.
Harley, who sat behind, seized the opportunity to interject.
Pretending to be indifferent, but actually couldn’t wait to bring the person home.
No wonder Derrick was so excited this time, I don’t know what certain people did to him, it’s really
despicable!
I murmured, “I knew about your actions, but it’s still important to be mindful of others when judging them.”
Harley paused for a moment, instantly realizing, “You!”
I turned around and carefully looked her up and down, which made her feel uncomfortable.
“What kind of look did you have?”
I smiled, shrugged, and turned my head back.
In no time, a frustrated voice of Harley came from behind.
“Sylvia! You were vulgar!”
On another day during morning self–study, there was still a stubbornly placed warm coffee and sandwich on my desk.
There were two additional French exercise papers and a note.
Title: [Bold! Cold cafeteria food and you dare to eat it!]
With just two test papers, you think you can stump me?
A smug smiley face was drawn afterwards.
I chuckled and took a bite of my sandwich, when I looked up and saw Marcus frozen in place.
Actually, I didn’t tell them, in order to save money and also to save time.
I have never had breakfast in the cafeteria.
On that day, I refused Marcus‘ question.
I knew his level and had done the summary–type questions, so there shouldn’t be any more problems.

I understood what he did was just to help me stimulate Derrick.
But I didn’t want their relationship to be strained because of my involvement.
I also didn’t want to spend the already urgent time and energy on such matters.
Marcus’s face darkened for a moment, then lit up with a smile from the past.
“Okay, but… as a friend, I still wanted to remind you.”
He leaned close to my ear and lowered his voice, “In the past, don’t forget, he pursued you while playing games with me.”
Everything he did was not from the heart, but just a means to win.
He said this sentence lightly, but it passed through the ear canal clearly, striking the eardrum and resonating in my mind.
I looked out of the window and locked eyes with Derrick, who was staring at me.
He tilted his head and smiled, looking cute and pure.
The door of the classroom was pushed open and then closed by people walking by, allowing a gust of cold wind to sneak into the warm and cozy room, stirring and fluttering everything.
A cool breeze slid from my cheeks to the back of my neck, dissolving into the warm air.
But in an instant, a layer of goosebumps spread densely from my scalp to my spine.
