Chapter 7
The fire ignited immediately–dry branches, wilted leaves, and old wooden boards fed the flames, which erupted into an inferno.
Smoke filled the air, and the awful stench suffocated everyone.
The flowers!
Callie’s cherished flowers were being consumed by the fire.
Eyes bloodshot, Alicia grabbed the watering can and dashed into the flames, desperate to put out the fire.
As soon as the water hit the fire, it turned to mist in the intense heat.
Alicia’s hair was singed, and her skin burned from the heat, but she held her ground and wouldn’t back down.
She poured out all the water from the tank in the greenhouse, yet a section of the flower bed continued to blaze.
Staring at the empty can, she clenched her jaw, fell to the ground, and rolled over, putting out the fire with her body.
The heat burned through her skin, revealing raw, bleeding flesh beneath. Alicia writhed in pain, a cry of anguish escaping her lips.
As tears filled her eyes and steam rose around her, she saw Marcus dash in, hurry to her side, and scoop her up into his arms.
In that moment, she felt disoriented, as though the last three years had been merely a bad dream.

She reached out with bloody hands to hold him, just as Mandy’s crics rang out behind them.
“Marcus, I’m here!”
Immediately, Marcus tossed her aside without hesitation and turned to gather Mandy in his arms.
As his silhouette disappeared into the dense smoke, a tear slipped from Alicia’s eye and slowly trickled down her cheek.
The raging flames engulfed her, and overwhelmed by pain, she shut her eyes in hopelessness.
Alicia woke up at the hospital. Staring at the brutal burns across her body, her face twisted with pain.
A nurse came in to check on her and change her bandages, cautioning, “Your wounds are serious. Where is your husband? He should come to the hospital to help care for you.”
Alicia’s heart throbbed with pain, and she managed to push a sentence past her lips, her voice barely a whisper.
“I’m not married. I don’t have a husband.”
Suddenly, the hospital room door burst open with a loud crash.
“And I don’t have a wife like you!”
Startled by the noise, Alicia glanced up and saw Marcus walking in with a cold expression, Mandy following behind, looking dejected.
Alicia suspected that Mandy must have said something to make him so angry. And she was right.

“What did Mandy do to upset you? You hit her, and now you’re trying to burn her alive!”
Alicia couldn’t believe what she was hearing and rushed to explain that Mandy was twisting the facts.
“She barged into the greenhouse without any reason and ruined a lot of flowers. I asked her to stop, but she refused. That’s why I acted. She’s the one who started the fire.”
“Still lying! She has no issue with you. Why would she provoke you out of nowhere? It’s you, jealous that she took your spot, so you flipped out and tried to kill her!
Seeing his face twisted in anger and hearing his harsh words, Alicial felt a sharp pain in her heart.
“Is that how you see me? As someone without feeling, someone cruel? Do you prefer to believe her side of the story instead of checking the greenhouse footage?”
Marcus’s expression was so dark that it seemed as if it could pour rain.

“Mandy is my wife now. Why should I doubt her and believe someone accused of killing my sister, and with a criminal history?”
Every word from Marcus cut into Alicia’s heart like a knife, breaking her down and making it harder to hold it together.
She clutched the bedsheet so tightly that her knuckles turned white, and her lips quivered as her voice shook with sorrow.
