Chapter 6
Genesis’s hand shot to her leg, fingertips meeting the hard outline of the cast.
The leg was still there.]
But the next second, her heart seized up]
As her fingers pressed down, whether she rubbed gently or pinched hard, that section of leg felt nothing–like some foreign plece attached to her body.
“No way… no way…”
She mumbled, trying to prop herself up with the bed sheets. But the moment she
she lifted herself halfway, her right leg gave out and she crashed
hard to the floor.
Just then, Isaiah’s anxious voice drifted from the doorway-
“Dr. Mitchell, please tell me there’s something we can do. She’s a race car driver, for Christ’s sake…“]
“We’ll have to see how she recovers.” The doctor’s voice was heavy with resignation. “But I really don’t recommend her getting back on the track. That kind of intensity–if she injures it again, the consequences would be catastrophic.“[]
After a brief silence came Isaiah’s hoarse response: “Okay, thanks.“]
Each word hit like a sledgehammer, crushing Genesis’s last shred of hope
She was born for racing
From the moment she first touched a steering wheel, she knew her life was tied to the roar of engines
-But now someone was telling her she’d never race again.]
This was a fate worse than death.
When Isaiah pushed through the door, he found her sprawled on the floor. He rushed to help her up, but froze when he saw the tears streaming down her face.
“You heard everything?”
Genesis wouldn’t look at him. She shoved away his outstretched hand, her voice shaking as she asked:[]
“Where’s Sadie?
Something shifted in Isaiah’s eyes, like he was afraid she might do something drastic. He quickly jumped to Sadie’s defense:
“Sadie’s young and stupid. I already tore her apart for driving without a license. She got hurt too, Gen. Can’t you just let this go?“||
Genesis’s head snapped up, her eyes bloodshot
So he knew Sadie didn’t have a license, and he still let her drive. Even entered her in a race]
This was the fourth time[]
Four crashes. Four times lying in a hospital bed.[]
And not once had Sadie given her a proper apology]
She wanted to laugh, but her mouth hurt too much from crying.
Tears just kept streaming down her face like a broken faucet.
Even now, he was still protecting her.
“What about me?” Genesis’s voice cracked. “If I can’t blame her, who the hell should I blame? Myself? It’s My leg that’s fucked up, not hers! MY career is over! And you’re still covering for her!”
Isaiah’s frown d
deepened, irritation creeping into his voice:[]
“Gen, I told you she didn’t mean it. Why can’t you just drop it?”
He paused, and his words took on an edge of blame: “Besides, if you hadn’t grabbed for the wheel, maybe none of this would’ve happened. Did you ever think that maybe you’re part of the problem here?
Genesis felt like someone had dumped ice water over her head. Every drop of blood in her body turned cold.
But after just a moment, she laughed
When it came to Sadie, she was always the one in the wrong
That already dead heart felt like it was being ripped open and ground into dust
She closed her eyes, her voice lifeless: “I’m tired. Just go.“]
Seeing the devastation on her face, Isaiah’s chest tightened
He finally realized how cruel his words had been. He opened his mouth to apologize, but nothing came out. He turned to leave and near tripped over himself
For the next three days, Isaiah barely left her side
He hand–fed her medicine, cooked all her old favorite dishes, even set up a cat beside her bed and jolted awake at the slightest sound
But Genesis was like a soulless puppet. She opened her mouth when he offered medicine, sat up when he helped her, never said a word or
looked at him once.
It wasn’t until Isaiah couldn’t take it anymore and blurted out, “I need to have a fake wedding with Sadie,” that she finally reacted.]]
“Okay, I’ll be there.”
Her tone was still Dat
Isaiah’s heart sank||
He’d expected tears, accusations–anything but this cold indifference.]
He rushed to explain, barely concealed panic in his voice: “Gen, the Whitakers are targeting Sadie. They want to force her into marriage. I’m her brother–I can’t just watch her get dragged into hell.“]–
“Here’s what I’m thinking–we go public with the divorce, then I stage a fake wedding with Sadie. But you gotta believe me–none of it’s real. The divorce is just for show. Once the whole Whitaker mess dies down, you’ll still be my wife. Nothing really changes.”
At this, Genesis actually started laughing softly
Not bitter, not mocking–genuine relief.]]
Nolan was finally making his move
Isaiah called the Whitakers hell on earth, but to her, he was the only lifeline that could pull her out of this suffocating cage.|||
