Chapter 19
When Sadie opened her eyes again, she found herself in a hospital
The moment she realized she was still alive, relief washed over her. But the next second, a different kind of agony–nothing like the crushing pain from before–surged up from deep within her body
It felt like her bone marrow was flowing with cramping, dull pain. The slightest movement felt like dying
She weakly called for a doctor, and a nurse came in.
Sadie took a shaky breath, her voice hoarse: “I’m in so much pain give me something for it“]
“That’s normal,” the nurse said flatly. “Everyone’s like this after amputation. It gets worse on rainy days. We were going to give you painkillers, but your brother said you’re allergic. For your own safety, you’ll just have to tough it out!
Amputation?
Sadie’s mind went blank with a buzzing sound
Her legs had just been injured–even though they’d been mangled into bloody pulp, they were still attached to her body!
When she escaped, she’d clearly seen them..]
She struggled to process this information, not quite grasping it yet, and shrieked: “What amputation? My legs are fine! They just hurt a little–how could you amputate them? What’s your name? I’m reporting you!”
As if to prove her point, she endured the excruciating pain to prop herself up and yanked off the blanket-]
“AHH! My legs… where are my legs!”
Under the blanket were only two ugly stumps.]
Sadie went crazy, grabbing the nurse’s arm and frantically asking where her legs had gone. The nurse had seen this scene countless times before. She offered a few routine words of comfort and left[]
The door closed, leaving Sadie alone on the hospital bed, completely losing her mind
She muttered incomprehensible words, her expression growing more twisted as she clawed at the blanket. Just as she grabbed her phone from the bedside table to make a call, the door opened again
“Ms. Sadie Voss,” several police officers stood in the doorway, their expressions serious. “You’re suspected of two counts of arson and one count of premeditated murder. Please come with us.
Sadie acted like she couldn’t hear them, throwing off the blanket to get out of bed, her eyes full of malicious light.||
But the next second, handcuffs clicked around her wrists.]
By the time she snapped back to reality, she was sitting in a wheelchair being pushed into a police car. The moment she saw the handcuffs, she struggled violently: “Fuck no! Isaiah, you fucking maniac! I hope you burn in hell!”
Her screams were loud, but no one there understood what she was saying.
The blame for both fires, along with Cameron’s severe injuries, ultimately fell on Sadie.]
She was sentenced to life in prison.
Chapter 11
As for Cameron, after Isaiah dragged him out of the fire, he ended up a complete wreck.
He quit his job at the hospital. The severe burns had left his face completely disfigured and unrecognizable.
He deeply regretted agreeing to help Sadie hide that phone call. His ears would always ring with the clear sound of bones when the car ran over her legs
He was trapped in this crushing guilt, torturing himself day after day
After Sadie’s downfall, people at the hospital finally learned that Dr. Merrick’s wife wasn’t her at all but the talented race car driver Genesis.]
When they heard Genesis had died, everyone sighed with sympathy, urging Isaiah to take care of himself and saying he could still save many more people.[]
But Isaiah resolutely quit the medical career he’d loved most.
No one knew where he went.
Some said they saw him holding a black urn, going to Genesis’s favorite racetrack and sitting by the track all night
Others said he went to Bali with two yellowed plane tickets, staying by the ocean for a very long time.[]
But from then on, no one in the city ever saw Isaiah again.
