Chapter 8
Staff carefully brushed the frost off Kim’s body, preparing to lift her out.
Peter snapped, “Stop!”
He strode toward Kim, the rims of his eyes reddening.
“Why did you put Kim in a suitcase?”
Ignoring the icy chill, he gently cradled her and wrapped her tightly in his coat.
“Don’t be scared, Kim. You’ll warm up soon.”
Funeral staff watched with moistened eyes.
“Mr. Jackson, Ms. Lee passed three days ago. Please let us take her.”
Peter’s chest constricted painfully.
“You’re lying! Kim’s been with me these three days. How could she be gone?”
Vivid memories flooded him-every gesture, every word she’d spoken.
He remembered everything. How could they claim she was dead?
His trembling fingers traced her cheek.
“They say you’re dead… but I won’t believe it.”
“After three years apart… how could you die when we finally reunited?”
Her skin remained soft and resilient, pale but no different from when she was alive.
Peter suspected foul play-how else would a living person end up in a suitcase?
“Mr. Jackson, please release Ms. Lee to us.”
Peter’s eyes turned bloodshot. “No. She’s still alive, I won’t hand her over.”
Who sends living people to funeral homes?
His stubbornness disrupted the proceedings, and leaving the deceased exposed was improper.
They had no choice but to call the police.
Officers soon arrived at the funeral home. “Mr. Jackson, the medical examiner is here. Please cooperate.”

Chapter 8
Reluctantly, Peter loosened his grip.
“Officer, Kim was fine when we exited the highway. I think they harmed her. Investigate thoroughly.”
Funeral staff protested indignantly.
“Officer, we followed procedure. We received the call to collect Ms. Lee’s remains three days ago.”
Peter found the claim absurd.
“Three days ago, Kim was alive and well! My girlfriend can confirm.”
He immediately called Samantha and explained the situation.
Samantha stated firmly, “That’s right. Kim was with us until the last service station.”
After taking statements, everyone went to the station to present evidence.
Reviewing the documents, an officer told Peter:
“We’ll verify everything. Await the autopsy results here.”
As the officer turned to leave, Peter stopped him.
“Officer, I request access to surveillance footage.”
A living person vanishing only to appear in a suitcase-the thought terrified him.
The officer nodded without objection.

The surveillance footage was quickly retrieved, but unexpectedly, none of the available footage showed Peter even catching a glimpse of Kim.
“How could this be?
Why did this happen?”
Every frame in the footage screamed that everything with Kim these past days had been his hallucination.
Just then, the medical examiner approached with autopsy results.
“The autopsy confirms Ms. Kim died in the Alpine Mountain Range avalanche three days ago.”
A deafening roar filled Peter’s ears: “What did you say?”
Kim was really dead?
!
No!
He refused to believe it.

Chapter 8
Three days ago, he’d been at the Alpine Mountain Range himself.
When the avalanche hit, everyone had been evacuated-how could she have been buried?
Leaving the police station, Peter numbly followed funeral home staff back to the funeral home.
Having witnessed countless farewells, they didn’t judge his behavior.
“Mr. Peter, we’ll begin Ms. Kim’s cremation shortly. You’re her only mourner-see her one last time.”
At “cremation,” Peter finally snapped to attention.
“No, I won’t allow it.”
