Chapter 19

Since learning about that night with Samantha, he had suffered for years.

Now knowing it might be fake, he naturally wanted the truth.

The doctor arrived quickly, and Peter recounted every detail of that day.

The doctor asked, “Have you ever blacked out from drinking before?”

Peter shook his head. “Never.”

Raymond knew this well too-unless asleep, Peter remembered everything clearly the next day if awake.

Hearing this, the doctor said:

“Eighty percent chance it’s fabricated. But for thoroughness, you need hospital tests.”

Peter didn’t refuse.

Before leaving, he walked to the swing set and said:

“Kim, I’m going to the hospital. Back soon.”

After a pause, he murmured: “I know. I wanted to tell you-I never betrayed you.”

The neurologist found this absurd.

“Was he always like this?”

Raymond shook his head. “No. Started after Kim died.”

“He insists Kim returned with him from the Alpine Mountain Range to Philadelphia. But only he saw her.”

Even Samantha, who traveled back with him, saw nothing when questioned later.

“Likely severe psychological illness.”

As they spoke, Peter approached.

“Finished talking with Kim. Let’s go.”

Soon, they drove to the hospital.

After tests, the doctor handed him a report:

“Results confirm you’d never engage sexually while unconscious.”

Meaning if he’d been with Samantha, he’d remember after sobering up.

Leaving the hospital, Peter’s face darkened.

He’d been deceived by a woman for two years.

Raymond stared at the results, stunned.

“Samantha would do this?”

He recalled Samantha’s devotion to Peter, how she resented Peter’s love for Kim.

“Peter, Samantha endured so much injustice for you. Yet you pine for Kim? She deserved better.”

Never imagining he’d been the fool.

With answers in hand, Peter confirmed Diana was home and called Samantha.

“Samantha, come to the Jackson Estate. We need to talk.”

After hanging up, Peter bid Raymond farewell and left.

The Jackson Estate stood elegant and imposing in central Philadelphia.

When Peter drove up, Samantha was already there with Sandra.

They sat in the parlor having afternoon tea with Diana.

Scents of cakes and coffee hung sweetly in the air.

Seeing Peter, Samantha rushed to him.

“Peter, you’re back?

What did you want to tell me?”

Peter brushed her hand aside and slammed the test report onto the coffee table.

“Samantha, we never slept together. How did you get pregnant?”

His words sent a ripple of shock through the living room.

Samantha hadn’t expected Peter to say this. She whirled toward her mother. “Mom!”

Diana looked at Peter in surprise. “Peter, what do you mean?”

Peter pointed at the test results on the coffee table. “See for yourself.”

Puzzled, Diana picked up the papers and went through them one by one.

Finally, she looked at Peter. “So… you two never slept together?”

Peter nodded. “Right.”

Diana’s eyes dropped to Samantha’s slightly rounded belly. “Then whose child is she carrying?”

Peter snorted. “You’ll have to ask her.”

These past two years, Peter believed he’d done nothing to wrong Samantha, yet she’d deceived him at every turn.

“Samantha,” he demanded, “who’s the father of your child?”

Samantha pressed her lips together, tears welling up in her eyes. “Mom, I…”
