My heart ached, and I cried for him. Then, I led him back to my small apartment.
That night, the thunder started again. Cole appeared in my room, clutching a pillow, ready to sleep on the floor. “What are you doing? I told you to
sleep on the sofa!”
“Afraid of the thunder,” he mumbled, settling onto the floor beside my bed. “I want you to stay with me.”
“You’re lying! You said you loved thunderstorms!”
He turned his head, his gaze dark and intense. “The day you left, it was thundering too. The thunder takes big sister away. I hate it.”
…Even the coldest heart would melt. I stroked his hair. “Don’t worry, I’m broke now, I can’t go anywhere.”
I woke up to breakfast already laid out on the table. “You made this?” I asked, incredulous.
“Yeah. After you left me, I started learning to cook.”
Right. My fault again.
After breakfast, I told him I was going to work and he should stay home. Cole absolutely refused. “What if you run away? I’m coming with you to
work”
I couldn’t argue with him, so I took him to the shelter. “Wow, Mr. Miller is here to inspect our work! Welcome, Mr. Miller!”

I gave him a sharp glare. “The second he’s gone, I’m sending you home.”
He stayed with me for a week. “Are you really not going back?” I asked, eating the dinner he’d made, a little troubled.
“Does my owner not want me anymore?”
Huh? What was that? I swear he was learning bad habits from the shelter dogs.
“But you can’t just stay here forever. Besides us older folks, it’s just animals. You should go out and talk to people your own age sometimes.”
“I only want to talk to Big Sister.”
Well, he really had picked up some habits.
