Landon shook his head. “Sir always showers and washes his hair first thing after work. That gives us a bit of time. I’ve prepped everything–it’ll be quick.”
“You just stand by the door. As soon as you hear him coming down, I’ll hand you the spatula. Flawless plan!”
For Nathan’s safety, Stella thought for a moment, then nodded. “Alright. Thanks!”
Landon let out a relieved breath. “It’s nothing.”
Stella rarely lied, and now here she was, posted at the kitchen entrance with her ears perked, heart pounding like she was cheating on a test.
Twenty minutes later-
Footsteps echoed from the staircase.
Stella nearly jumped. “He’s coming! He’s coming! Red alert!”
Landon, in the middle of flipping the final dish, was so startled he almost tossed the wok onto the floor.
Decades of chef training nearly crumbled.
“Okay, okay, come here–take the spatula! Just stir a couple times, then sprinkle these scallions on top!”
Landon was fooling his boss for the first time. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t nervous.
Nathan came down the stairs in clean clothes, freshly blow–dried hair.
His eyes immediately scanned the green sofa in the living room.
No sign of the girl curled up there like usual. He was mildly surprised.
Had she gone to her room?
The butler caught sight of him and smiled. “Sir, Ms. Stella is in the kitchen.”
Nathan’s brows drew together slightly.
“She’s doing what?”
He walked to the kitchen doorway–and froze.
There she was, pretty and delicate, tied into a black apron.
His apron.
The black strap cinched around her slim waist, making her look even more petite and impossible to hold onto.
She was holding a spatula in one hand, stirring the food in the pan.
Nathan strode over. “Stella, why are you cooking? Where’s the chef?”
As he spoke, he reached over and took the spatula from her hand. His voice was gentle. “Let me.”
The moment he moved closer, Stella’s heart shot into her throat.
Their fingers brushed, sending a jolt like static all over her body.
Even with the smell of food in the kitchen, all she could smell was the faint, cool scent of him.
Landon quickly stepped in with a grin “Sir, these dishes were all made by Ms. Stella. She’s been learning with me all afternoon–said she wanted to surprise you.”

Nathan’s hand stilled. His warm gaze landed on Stella’s face, eyes soft with surprise and something almost sticky sweet.
She turned bright red under his stare. “Y–Yeah. I just wanted to surprise you.”
“Did something happen?” Nathan asked, voice still calm.
Sparkle needed his help?
Good. That meant he was still useful to her.
Caught immediately, Stella’s long lashes trembled nonstop. “It’s just a small thing. I’ll explain over dinner.”
The food hit the table still steaming.
Everything looked, smelled, and probably tasted amazing.
Stella felt incredibly guilty and couldn’t bring herself to look Nathan in the eye.
Nathan picked up some potatoes and popped them into his mouth. His brow lifted slightly. “If you need help, Stella, just say the word.”
This clearly wasn’t her cooking.
But the fact that she’d gone through the trouble to lie about it meant a lot.
Stella took a few calming breaths, forced a smile, and said, “It’s about Louis. He used to live in the slums, but now he’s suddenly moved. I think he’s still somewhere nearby, but I can’t find him. I was hoping you might know someone who could help.”
Guilt aside, the food really was delicious.
Stella finally picked up her fork and tried the fish.
Soft, tender, and flavorful–she mentally gave the chef a thumbs–up.
“No problem. What’s Louis‘ name?” Nathan asked.
She hadn’t expected him to agree so quickly, and her tension eased just a bit.
“His name is Jimmy. This fish is so good, you should eat more!”
She picked up a piece of fish and placed it in Nathan’s bowl.
Nathan stared at the bowl for a few seconds.
Sparkle served him food. Absolute bliss.
The servants, who hadn’t gotten off work yet, watched from the sidelines with frowns.
Sir was known to have a strict cleanliness streak. No way he’d eat something someone else touched.
The next second, they watched him calmly pick up the piece of fish and chew slowly.
So much for the germaphobia lie.
