Chapter 53 Caught and Cornered
“Since you’re already here, take a photo with us!” one of the male students said.
“Aren’t you supposed to be filming right now? What are you doing here alone?”
That came from a more career–focused fan.
Lucas was speechless. His tone turned sharp. “I already said I’m here for personal reasons. Everyone, please leave.”
As if they’d listen
They swarmed in like zombies, all clamoring for autographs and selfies.
Eventually, the school administration caught wind of the chaos and rushed over to disperse the students.

Lucas took the initiative to apologize. “Sorry, Mr. Barry. My younger brother Jackson was playing in a basketball game today I just wanted to surprise him. I didn’t expect things to get out of hand.”
There had nearly been a stampede. Mr. Barry wasn’t thrilled, though he tried not to show it. He forced a smile. “I understand. I understand. Why don’t you rest here for a while? Then slip out quietly when it’s safe.
Lucas nodded. “I got here late and missed Jackson’s performance. Was the game recorded? Could I watch the footage?”
The camera wouldn’t have only captured the court–it would’ve panned over the audience, too.
Mr. Barry held his teacup. “Ashford High lost today. They didn’t play very well.”
Lucas smiled. “That’s okay. Winning or losing is just part of the game.”
These events at Ashford were usually recorded.
Soon enough, Lucas was watching the game footage on Mr. Barry’s computer.
In the first row, a pretty girl quickly appeared in the frame.
When the crowd finally dispersed, Stella jumped down from a tree in front of the gym.
The blond kid was stunned. He had no idea how the fairy–like girl had zipped up the tree in the first place.
jimmy, on the other hand, wasn’t surprised at all.
Their childhood home had several big trees in the yard, and Stella used to love climbing them for fun
Sunbathing during the day, stargazing at night.
He used to want to join her, but he was too chubby, and she couldn’t lift him
One time, she came up with a plan–tied a rope around him and tried to hoist him up.
Before he ended up as a ghost hanging from the tree, he actually made it up there.
But the moment he did, the branch Stella usually sat on snapped. They both crashed to the ground.
He had plenty of padding, so he was fine, Stella, though, couldn’t sit properly for days
After that, she never let him climb trees with her again.
“Why’d you climb the tree?” the blond kid asked, confused.
Stella brushed leaves off her clothes and made something up on the spot. “I thought I saw a bird’s nest up there. Turned out I
was wrong
Why else would she climb up?

Obviously, she was hiding from Lucas.
He’d probably come to see his brother’s basketball game.
But she didn’t really want to run into him.

A plot device is still just a plot device, even if reborn–only this time, it’s to create bigger misunderstandings for the main couple.
She had no intention of being part of their drama.
The sun was blazing today, but the wind was strong, too, Jimmy’s sweat had mostly dried.
His bangs fell across his forehead again, covering his eyes.
Eyes as dark and cold as a snake flicked toward the direction of the crowd.
Lucas was still Lucas.
If he remembered correctly, Stella had dated him.
Stella stood in the doorway, her peach blossom eyes dazzling. “It’s still here. That’s nice.”
Inside, she ordered a jasmine milk green tea.
The previous owner wasn’t around. The staff today was a woman she didn’t recognize.
Stella figured the shop had done well enough that the boss had stopped showing up.
Jimmy and the blond guy weren’t big milk tea drinkers, but they followed Stella’s lead and each ordered a jasmine milk green as well
“You wait here for the drinks. My sister and I are going to grab a seat,” Jimmy said to the blond.
They took a spot in the corner.
Jimmy finally asked the question that had been weighing on him most. “Where have you been all these years? Have you been okay**
The tables in the milk tea shop were small. Stella reached out and ruffled Louis’s overly long hair.
“That’s what I wanted to ask you, too. But since you’re curious, I’ll tell you my side first.”
Feeling the warmth from her hand, Jimmy finally accepted that Stella was real. A living, breathing person
He ulted his head up, eyes wide, staring at Stella.
Stella didn’t plan to hide anything. She spoke honestly. “I came straight from the day of the car crash, eleven years ago. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true. You’ve probably noticed–I haven’t changed at all?
“If you do the math, I’m only one year older than you now. I’m eighteen, you’re seventeen.”
Jimmy had been watching her closely this whole time. And yeal–he’d noticed
