Chapter 50 A Name from the Past
Stella!
If she were still alive, Mr. Morgan figured she would’ve made a name for herself.
But she’d been dead for eleven years.

The thought barely formed before he shook his head. Impossible. I must’ve imagined it–end–of-the–month paycheck delusion.
In the gym, the crowd was already spilling out, voices rising and blending in a noisy stream of post–game chatter.
Jimmy had just stepped outside when a voice rang out behind him–familiar, yet strange.
“Jimmy”
He couldn’t even remember the last time anyone had called him that.
Maybe there was someone at Ashford High with the same name.
That was possible.. but something in the tone made his steps falter. It carried a thread of familiarity that tugged at him, though he couldn’t place it.
Maybe some old kindergarten classmate had recognized him? Ashford High could easily have someone from back then.
He didn’t want to be recognized. So after that brief pause, he kept walking, not so much as glancing back.
If he didn’t look, whoever it was might think they’d gotten the wrong person.
The blond kid beside him did look back–and froze, eyes going wide. “Holy crap… where’d she come from?”
He stared for a few seconds before realizing his boss was already halfway down the path. Jogging to catch up, he blurted, “Boss, there’s a gorgeous girl back there, and I think she was calling you!”
His name only one letter apart–close enough for the blond to assume it was the same.
Jimmy fought the urge to turn around, his tone flat. “Wasn’t talking to me.“)
The blond sighed, disappointed.
And then, a slim figure zipped past him and came right up behind Jimmy, tapping him on the shoulder
“Jimmy! Are you deaf?”
The blond’s stomach dropped. Did she just insult him? She doesn’t know she’s talking to the boss of Trinity High?
But that voice–bright, lively–it clicked into place with a face from his memories.
This time. Jimmy couldn’t resist. He turned–and froze
Adelicate, striking face filled his vision. His mind went blank for a beat, pupils contracting. His voice trembled. “Stella?”
That single word swept away all of Stella’s doubts. She smiled. “Good, kid. You haven’t forgotten what I look like.”
Forget her face! That was impossible.
But what was this? His sister–dead for eleven years–standing right here in front of him

Right. This was Ashford High. She’d gone here back then.
Could it be that after she died, her spirit stayed here?

He knew how much she’d loved school, but studying in the afterlife? That was something else. The teachers would probably weep if they found out.
Jimmy’s eyes burned beneath his long fringe. He crossed his hands and held them out in front of her forehead. “The sun’s blazing out here. How can you just show yourself like this?”
Stella rolled her eyes and swatted his hands away. “What are you talking about? I’m alive, thank you very much. What’s there to fear from sunlight?”
Jimmy didn’t buy it and tried to shield her again, “Let’s talk somewhere shady.”
The blond just stood there, stunned. The gorgeous girl is friends with the boss? How had he never heard of her before?
“You can see me, right?” the “goddess” suddenly asked him.
The blond nearly burst with excitement, nodding so hard it looked like he might sprain something. “Of course, goddess!”
Stella turned back to Louis. “See? Even Blondie can see me!
“Goddess, you even know my name?” The blond’s cheeks went pink. “Boss, do you talk about me to her a lot?”
Both Stella and Jimmy were silent for a beat.
With hair like that, how could they not know his name?
Jimmy glanced down and noticed the shadow on the ground at her feet. He smacked the blond. That hurt?”
The blow landed sharp and fast.
Tears sprang to the blond’s eyes. “Yeah! Hurts like hell!”
Stella rubbed her nose. This blond must’ve done something unspeakable in a past life to end up serving as my school–bully little brother’s Jackey
