Another red light stopped them, and Nathan eased his foot onto the brake. He turned to look at the bright, striking girl
beside him.
She was dressed casually today, her long hair pulled into a high ponytail, the little gold dog pendant hanging against her
chest.
He was jealous of that pendant–jealous of how close it was to her heart.
“No need,” he said calmly. “The issue isn’t on our side. My assistant will handle it. I just need to give a few instructions.”
His phone felt cool in his hand as he picked it up again, his eyes brushing over the gold bamboo bracelet on his wrist. He craved Sparkle’s attention–every bit of it he could get.
Behind his glasses, the light in his eyes dimmed, and his long fingers typed a brief reply.
The answer came quickly: “Understood, Mr. Foster.”
Stella didn’t push him further. Nathan wasn’t like her silly, impulsive younger brother–he knew where his boundaries lay. If she said too much, she’d just sound like his mother.
The car rolled up to the gates of Ashford High School.
Unknown vehicles weren’t allowed inside, so a security guard walked over. “Hello… ah, Mr. Foster! Long time no see! I’ll raise the barrier right away!!
At Ashford High, everyone knew Nathan.
He’d graduated with top marks, gone on to build an empire, and still donated a new building to the school every year. In the school’s decades–long history, he was the only alumnus to give back at that level.
Nathan inclined his head with polite warmth. “It’s been a while, Mr. Morgan.”
For a man worth billions to address him so respectfully warmed Mr. Morgan’s heart. No wonder he’d made it so far
Mr. Morgan had worked as a guard at the school for twenty years–longer than most principals had stayed in their jobs. He’d been here when Nathap was a student, and he was still here now.
This time, he noticed the young woman sitting in Nathan’s passenger beat and froze for a second.
It was the f
first time he’d ever seen Nathan bring a woman back to campus.
“Mr. Foster, is this your girlfriend?” he asked, curiosity slipping through.
From the passenger seat, Stella shook her head. “No, Mr. Morgan.
He’d already hit the remote to raise the gate before asking the question, and the car slipped through before he could press for
more.
Mr. Morgan stared after the silver vehicle, puzzled.
Wat–she’d called him Mr. Morgan too. And it had sounded so natural
He pictured her again–delicate features, bright eyes…
Something about her was familiar. Not in a passing way–more like someone he’d actually known.
He pulled off his cap and rubbed his shining bald head, the sun reflecting off it
Where had he seen her before!
Why couldn’t he remember?

A celebrity maybe?
After a long moment, he still couldn’t place it.
Jamming his cap back on, he muttered, “Good grief. Maybe I really am getting early–onset dementia.”
“Mr. Morgan still works security here?” Stella asked in surprise.
Ashford’s guards worked in shifts, so they weren’t all on duty at the same time.
The last time she’d come with Tina, she hadn’t seen him.

Back in the day. Mr. Morgan had been infamous at Ashford–not for misbehavior, but for his intimidating bald head.
troublemakers who came to start fights at the school would bolt the moment he took his cap off.
Some gang
In truth, though, he’d always been a man of strong principles.
Eleven years later, he didn’t look quite as fierce as before.
Nathan nodded. “Yes. He’s been here the whole time. He’s the one who reported our principal back then for keeping a
mistress.
Stella laughed out loud. “Haha! My Mr. Morgan is still my Mr. Morgan–forever young, forever brimming with justice!”
She’d wanted to greet him properly, but Nathan had driven straight in before she had the chance.
The car pulled into a spot near the gymnasium.
Stepping out into the bright sunlight, Stella lifted a hand to shield her eyes.
A shadow fell over her almost immediately.
She looked up to find a sun umbrella tilted above her head. “You keep everything in your car?”
It was like he was driving a luxury gadget car.
Nathan adjusted his glasses with one hand, his tone unhurried. “The butler prepared it.”
Stella’s smile widened. “Your butler’s so thoughtful! Let’s go–looks like a lot of people came to watch the game today.”
It was Sunday, so normally the campus wouldn’t be this busy, yet students were everywhere, all heading toward the gym.
