“Emma’s planning to join the company. I’m going to have her take your place. She’s a highly regarded study-abroad graduate, way more capable than you. If you still want to work, you can be her secretary. Otherwise, just stay home and be a full-time housewife.”
He watched me for a reaction, but I barely flinched. Honestly, I was relieved. He’d just given me the perfect excuse to leave without any resistance.
I shrugged and replied, “Okay, I’ll resign and let her be the CEO.”
Thinking I was angry, Liam casually reassured me, “I’m doing this for your own good. So many women would envy that kind of lifestyle. I’ll take you on a trip soon to help you relax.”
I shook my head, not interested. “If you really cared, you’d come with me to the orphanage to see the director this week.”
Liam sighed, “Okay, it’s been a while since I saw him too.”
We grew up in the same orphanage. Girls mature faster than boys, so whenever anyone picked on him, I was the one who stepped in.
Back then, Liam would blink those big eyes at me and say, “When we grow up, I’ll protect you, Meimei. I’ll treat you well forever.”
But forever turned out to be a lot shorter than we imagined, and promises made on a whim didn’t last. Liam didn’t keep his word.
In college, everything changed. The bright lights of the city distracted him, and he fell for Emma, the French department’s queen. I should’ve seen it coming when he started picking French classes just because of her.
At first, Emma didn’t show any interest in him. She went abroad with a rich heir, leaving him chasing after her.
Now, with Liam’s success and fortune, my once-vibrant rose had withered, while Emma’s beauty shone more brightly than ever.
