Matthew froze, he gazed at that frail body for a long time, quietly.
He stood there, like a statue.
In the distance, the rescuers, carrying Ashley’s body, walked heavily towards Matthew.
Then they carefully placed the stretcher in front of him.
“Mr. Allen, please accept our condolences…”
The rain gradually grew heavier, blurring Matthew’s vision.
He knelt down with a thud, his eyes swollen red.
Matthew’s outstretched hands trembled even more, failing to pick up the corpse in front of him several times.
Finally, with the help of the rescuers, he managed to hold Ashley’s body tightly.
Just half a day ago, Ashley was still sitting in his passenger seat, smiling, her bright eyes telling him about her affections.
Now she was silent, lying quietly in his arms.
Her icy body temperature spread to him, making his entire heart feel like it was wrapped in ice.
“Ashley, don’t play jokes on me anymore, wake up quickly, okay?”
He called out to the person in his arms again and again, but the person in his arms seemed to be throwing a tantrum, not saying a single word.
Matthew didn’t mind, he just pressed his face against hers, like he used to cuddle up to Ashley.
The bloodstains and thick dust on her face dirtied his, but he didn’t even frown.
Matthew remembered many things.
He had kept many things from Ashley all these years.
And the furthest back was that he had noticed her even earlier than she thought.
At that year’s freshman welcome party, Ashley dancing gracefully on stage caught his eye at first glance.
Her light footsteps, swirling skirt, and bright smile.
He still remembered them very clearly.
Perhaps seeing him lost in thought, his roommate next to him quietly and excitedly told him about the girl’s background.
His roommate said a lot, but Matthew only remembered her name–Ashley.
It sounded like a very good and very beautiful name.
He silently repeated it several times in his mouth.
He even said her name together with his own once.
Ashley, Matthew.
It sounded like a perfect match.
Soon, he shook his head.
No, the person he liked was Sarah, and she was the only one who could be on the same household registration book as him in the future.
Although Matthew had firmly decided on Sarah at the time, his gaze had always followed Ashley.
He would see her smiling and chatting with others on the steps, and he would also see her and her friends chasing each other in the setting sun. Unknowingly, his heart and eyes were completely filled with Ashley’s reflection.
Later, Ashley also fell for him and started pursuing him. He found himself subtly wanting to say yes.

But this urge was quickly suppressed.
Until Sarah coquettishly asked him to take revenge on Ashley for her, his first reaction was to refuse.
He didn’t believe such a wonderful girl would do such cruel things.
But after Sarah heard his refusal, she started acting unreasonably again, even making a scene on the rooftop.
He still liked her after all, so naturally he didn’t want her to become like this.
So, he agreed.
He agreed to break up with Sarah after taking revenge on Ashley 99 times.
The first time he took revenge on Ashley, he actually felt more self–reproach than satisfaction.
After all, such a wonderful girl almost lost her life because of his revenge.
But the more he took revenge later, he slowly grew numb, inside and out.
And Sarah also had more smiles on her face.
So, the last trace of guilt in his heart also disappeared.
Until that time, without his permission, they drugged Ashley and threw her to a bunch of hooligans.
He exploded in anger after many years.
At the time, he only thought it was about saving face; after all, Ashley was still his girlfriend.
If word got out that his girlfriend was assaulted, where would his reputation be?
It was precisely because of this incident that his feelings for Ashley gradually changed.
But he still didn’t care.
Until today, when he threw Ashley into the fire, and she said she was looking forward to his gift.
Matthew inexplicably felt a pang of panic.
This panic was more intense than when he learned Sarah was leaving him.
In that moment of his hesitation.
He actually thought of many answers.
According to the original plan, after this revenge ended, he would reveal the true purpose of his relationship with her in front of the public.
And demand she apologize to Sarah publicly.
Then his relationship with Ashley would completely end.
If she was sincere, he would consider giving her a sum of money as compensation.
But what he thought then was, he wouldn’t humiliate her after the revenge.
He would also give her a sum of money as compensation, so they could part ways amicably.
But when he saw the raging fire and his phone with no new messages.
Matthew panicked; at that moment, he had only one thought.
Save Ashley, she absolutely must not be harmed.
As long as she could come out safely, he would agree to anything she wanted.
Including Ashley’s New Year’s wish from long ago-
to be his wife.
But, the premise for all of this was that Ashley was still alive.
