“Are you really really going to divorce?”
Annalise raised her face, her pale lips trembling slightly, yet a flicker of joy flashed in her eyes.
She suddenly threw herself into Rufus’s arms,“I thought… I’d never have another chance to be with you again in this lifetime.”
Rufus froze for a moment before wrapping his arms around her frail shoulders.
He clearly also liked Annalise very much and wanted to marry her, yet an inexplicable dull ache rose in his chest.
He subconsciously rubbed his temples, thinking it was probably due to his sleepless night, making his emotions overly sensitive.
“Rest well, and once you’re better, we’ll get married.”
He patted Annalise on the back, his voice unconsciously softening
As soon as Mrs. Thwaites saw the doctor enter, she immediately asked, “How is my daughter?”
“Don’t worry, there’s nothing seriously
usly wrong with the patient’s body. Mainly caused by transient fainting due to excessive fright, that’s why she fainted.”
The doctor removed the stethoscope, “Stay overnight for observation, and if there are no major issues tomorrow, she can be discharged.”
After hearing the doctor’s words, Mr. Thwaites, who was sitting nearby, instantly relaxed his tense shoulders.
Annalise, however, tugged at Rufus’s sleeve at just the right moment, saying in a coquettish voice, “Rufus, I’m a bit hungry. I want to eat Soup Dumplings from that shop on the street corner now.”
“Alright, wait a moment then. I’ll go buy them now.
Rufus agreed without hesitation. As he turned around, he happened to see his own bodyguard hurrying in through the door, with some
bloodstains on his hands.
He recognized the very person who had rescued Carice by the diff.
“Where’s Carice? Why isn’t she here?”
The bodyguard couldn’t help but feel puzzled. In the past, Rufus would never have cared about his wife’s whereabouts.
“Mr. Sackhoff, the madam didn’t come to the hospital with us.”
The bodyguard lowered his voice, “But she asked me to bring you a gift that’s in the car, saying it’s for your birthday… Would you like to see it
Rufus paused mid–step, remembering that she had indeed mentioned preparing a gift for him.
But it’s not strange at all for her to give gifts. She has been giving gifts every year in the Past but Rufus never cared.
The reply from Carice in last night’s phone call flashed through his mind, and he felt inexplicably irritated.
“No need, just leave it there.”
His tone was cold.
“Probably just some trivial things again. I’m not in the mood to look now,
With that, he was about to walk away when the bodyguard added, “The madam also said you must open this gift personally.”
Rufus sneered
We’re about to divorce, and you’re still playing games??
He took out his phone to check the time and turned toward the elevator:“Tell her I’m not interested. Don’t send anything in the future either. I don’t like it anyway, and I’ll just end up throwing it away.”
As the metal elevator doors slowly closed, he inexplicably thought of Carice
Her face uncontrollably surfaced in his mind.

He remembered how she always claimed to have a weak stomach but would habitually brew strong coffee whenever she worked late
Despite her fear of heights, she eagerly accompanied him on mountain hikes.
Even last week, when he casually mentioned craving Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs, the next day she had prepared her own version on the dining table.
Sir? What flavor of buns would you like?
The clerk’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
“One of each flavor, please.”
Rufus took the paper bag, his nails digging unconsciously into his palm.
It was just a few years of marriage–why should he dwell on Carice’s dispensable acts o of thoughtfulness?
He doesn’t love her anyway.
When returning to the hospital, Annalise was very happy:”You’re still the best to me!”
Rufus smiled as he handed over the steamed buns, but his mind was still preoccupied with Carice’s whereabouts.
The phone screen suddenly lit up at this moment,
he hurriedly tapped to check but found it wasn’t a message from Carice
Rufus felt inexplicably disappointed.
