As her words fell, the room fell into dead silence.
Everyone widened their eyes, unable to believe their ears.
That Carice, who had been desperate for Rufus, actually said she didn’t like him anymore?
All
leyes were fixed on Carice, faces filled with shock. Only Rufus stood before her, his suit immaculate, expression cold, not a ripple in his eyes.
“How many times have you played this game of push and pull? His voice was low, laced with undisguised sarcasm, “I’ve told you, no matter how much you fuss, it’s useless.”
He leaned slightly forward, his thin lips parting as he enunciated each word slowly, as if to crush the last shred of her dignity-

As his words fell, the surrounding guests finally snapped out of their shock, and whispers surged like a tidal wave.

But no one listened.

Frost formed on her eyelashes, her breath came out in white puffs, her limbs were frozen stiff, and even her blood seemed to have congealed.
The freezer was at minus thiny degrees, and she was left wearing only a thin slip, her exposed skin already turning blue and purple from the
cold.
“I can’t die….” she struggled to move, I can’t die..”
The immigration paperwork was about to come through.
She still had to leave this place.
Soon, she could start a new life.

Carice closed her eyes, a metallic sweetness rising in her throat.
Just then, Annalise’s phone suddenly rang.
She seemed to deliberately put it on speaker, letting Carice hear the voice on the other end crystal clear-
“Annalise, where did you go?”
It was Rufus
His voice was deep and tender, carrying a doting tone Carice had never heard before.
I feel a bit dizzy.. Annalise’s voice instantly turned frail“I’m in the lounge…”
“Wait there, I’m coming right away.”
The call ended, and the cold storage room fell back into silence.
Hearing Rufus speak to Annalise with such gentleness, Carice slowly closed her eyes. For some reason, she suddenly recalled those long days and nights she had written about in her diary.
On the yellowed pages, the handwriting was blurred by tears, each stroke a despair she had carved with her own hands.
She wrote about how Rufus booked an entire revolving restaurant just to let Annalise see snow during her birthday celebration;
She wrote about how he stayed by Annalise’s bedside all night when she had a fever, even missing the bell–ringing ceremony for his company’s IPO;
She wrote that when he looked at Annalise, the tenderness in his eyes was like melting spring snow, but when he turned to her, only biting frost remained.
For so many nights and days, she had been a pathetic voyeur, hiding in the shadows, watching their love unfold.
Thankfully, now, she no longer loved him.
This realization made Carice twitch the corner of her mouth and sink completely into darkness.
