A flicker of anger flashed in Ryan Paisley’s eyes before vanishing just as quickly.
“Ethan, this isn’t the time for pride. If something happens to Evelyn, you’ll regret it!”
Ethan Sullivan shot him a cold glance. “If you’re so concerned, go stop her yourself.”
After a brief hesitation, Ryan strode forward.
The instructor was explaining safety precautions to Evelyn while holding the horse’s reins. Sensing someone approach, Evelyn turned and met Ryan’s worried gaze.
“Miss Sullivan, this horse is too spirited for a beginner.”
The corner of Evelyn’s lips lifted. “Thank you for your concern, Mr. Paisley. But my decision is made.”
Ryan frowned. “Even if you’re upset with Ethan, don’t gamble with your safety.”
“You worry too much,” she said lightly. “He’s not worth that much to me.”
Before he could respond, she swung onto the horse with effortless grace. The deep red riding habit accentuated her slender waist, her ponytail swaying in the wind—radiant and fearless.
Ryan’s breath hitched. He quickly lowered his gaze to hide his awe. When he looked up again, Evelyn was already galloping toward the heart of the equestrian center.
Ethan’s eyes tracked the retreating figure in red. He’d never seen Evelyn like this—confident, bold, like a blazing flame.
In his memories, she had always been gentle and obedient, clinging to him like ivy. This unfamiliar version of her stirred something foreign in his chest.
Nearby, Isabella Jackson dug her nails into her palms, though her smile remained sweet. “Lily, shall we go riding too?”
Lily White caught her meaning and nodded. “Perfect. A little exercise would be nice.”
They soon changed into riding gear and selected docile horses while the others lingered in the lounge.
Alexander King approached Ethan with sincere remorse. “Ethan, I was foolish before—”
Ethan cut him off coldly. “Keep your girlfriend away from Evelyn.”
Alexander and Lucas Laurier exchanged startled glances—was Ethan actually protecting his ex-wife?
The sound of hooves echoed in the distance as Evelyn reappeared, galloping toward them on the spirited stallion, her hair whipping behind her like a living painting.
Unconsciously, Ethan rose to his feet, his gaze locked onto her.
Then, chaos erupted—Isabella and Lily’s horses suddenly bolted, charging straight toward Evelyn!
