Chapter 47
Ethan Sullivan turned to leave when Isabella Jackson suddenly wrapped her arms around him from behind.
“Ethan, don’t go…” Her voice trembled, tears soaking into his suit.
His brow furrowed as he tried to pry her fingers loose.
“Isabella, let go.”
“No!” She clung desperately to his sleeve. “You promised me… when I turned eighteen…”
Ethan stiffened, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes.
He turned to face her, meeting her red-rimmed gaze. “I remember.”
All these years, he had indulged her every whim—even when she hurt Evelyn.
“Then why won’t you divorce her?” Isabella tilted her face up, tears streaking her cheeks.
His throat worked, but no words came.
“Are you in love with her?” Her voice turned sharp.
“Impossible.” The denial was absolute.
“Then divorce her!” She gripped his arm. “We can compensate her—any amount!”
After a long silence, he sighed. “Give me time.”
Isabella released him, forcing a smile. “Fine. I’ll wait.”
As Ethan walked away, she wiped her tears, her eyes darkening with malice.
If Evelyn disappeared forever, the problem would solve itself.
Ethan’s Maybach had just left the Jackson estate when he spotted a familiar figure.
Evelyn walked alone along the mountain road, her back straight.
Isabella’s question echoed in his mind, his frown deepening.
Love? Impossible.
If he loved her, he wouldn’t have let the Jacksons mistreat her. He wouldn’t have shielded Isabella.
Her recent defiance just unsettled him—that was all.
The black Maybach screeched to a halt beside her.
“Get in.” He lowered the window, his tone commanding.
Evelyn didn’t turn. “No need.”
His lips curled. “Angry about earlier?”
“Do you care if I’m angry?” She finally glanced at him, a mocking smile on her lips.
“No.”
“Then why ask?”
His gaze turned icy. “Don’t test me.”
“Likewise.” She met his eyes without flinching. “Control your people. If it happens again—”
“Are you threatening me?”
“A warning.” She smirked. “Need I remind you about Grandfather’s birthday banquet?”
Just then, a Lamborghini roared up and stopped ahead.
Daniel Sterling strode toward them, his intense gaze fixed on Evelyn.
