Chapter 39

Ethan Sullivan stood by the bed, sunlight streaming through the curtains to illuminate his form. He buttoned his shirt with deliberate slowness, the defined lines of his abs faintly visible in the morning light.

Evelyn Sullivan abruptly turned her head away, the tips of her ears turning pink.

“How much longer are you going to stare?”

Ethan chuckled lowly, leaning in close to her ear. “You examined me quite thoroughly last night.”

“Get lost!”

Evelyn yanked the covers over her head. Her muffled voice came from beneath the sheets. “I need to get dressed.”

“I already had clothes sent over.”

He finished tying his tie and glanced at his watch. “I’ll pick you up at seven tonight.”

“I’m busy.”

“Then eight.”

His footsteps faded as the door clicked shut. Only then did Evelyn throw off the covers, staring blankly at the ceiling.

She never should have come back for her phone last night.

Grabbing her phone, she dialed a number. “Find out who was in VIP Room 5 at Mirage Club last night.”

Under the hot spray of the shower, Evelyn glared at the marks on her skin in the mirror, muttering curses under her breath.

The doorbell rang. The delivery included not just a dress, but undergarments in her exact size.

Frowning, she changed and sent Sophia Reynolds a text to take the day off.

Inside the black Maybach, Colin Keller was delivering his report.

“Mr. Sullivan, it’s Brother Chen from the north side. He has significant influence in the nightlife scene—complicated background.”

Ethan’s gaze turned icy. “I don’t want to hear that name in this city by sundown.”

“Understood.”

At MY Fashion Group, Sophia hesitated for a long moment before dialing a familiar number.

“What is it?” Alexander King’s voice was laced with impatience.

“My gown is still in your car.”

“I know. I’ll have my assistant return it.”

The call ended abruptly. Sophia gave a bitter laugh and tossed her phone onto the desk.

At King Enterprises, the secretary had just retrieved the garment bag from the car when Lily White suddenly appeared.

“Is this a surprise for me?” Lily’s eyes sparkled.

“This belongs to Ms. Reynolds—”

Lily snatched the bag. “I’ll explain to Alexander.”

She strutted into the elevator, leaving the secretary sighing in resignation.

At noon, Sophia called again. “Where’s my dress?”

Silence stretched for several seconds.

“There was… an incident,” Alexander said haltingly. “I’ll replace it.”

Sophia hung up with a cold laugh. She should have expected this.
