Chapter 27
Isabella’s champagne glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the floor with a piercing crash that silenced the ballroom.
Her nails dug into her palms as she stared at Ethan’s hand tightly gripping Evelyn’s.
“Ethan…” Her voice trembled, tears welling in her eyes.
Victoria rushed to support her daughter, glaring at Evelyn. “Mr. Sullivan, surely you’re being deceived! Isabella is the one who deserves your attention!”
Ethan’s icy gaze silenced Victoria instantly.
“My personal affairs are none of your concern.”
Charles’s face darkened, his grip tightening on his cane. He never expected Ethan to publicly defend that illegitimate girl!
“Mr. Sullivan, we’re only concerned about Evelyn’s reputation—”
“Reputation?” Ethan scoffed. “Since when has the Jackson family cared about her reputation?”
The ballroom fell deathly quiet, guests holding their breaths.
Evelyn wrenched her hand free and strode toward the exit without looking back.
“Stop!” Ethan commanded sharply.
Her footsteps didn’t falter, her retreating figure resolute.
As Ethan moved to follow, Isabella grabbed his sleeve desperately.
“Tell me the truth, Ethan…” Tears streamed down her face. “Have you fallen for my sister?”
Ethan frowned, slowly withdrawing his arm.
“Isabella, don’t do this.”
“Then why?!” she shrieked hysterically. “We were meant to be together!”
Exhaustion flickered in Ethan’s eyes. “What happened three years ago is over.”
“No!” Isabella shook her head wildly. “Everything will go back to how it was now that I’m home!”
Ethan said nothing more, turning on his heel to leave.
At the villa, Evelyn sat quietly by the floor-to-ceiling window.
Hearing the door open, she spoke without turning.
“Ethan, let’s get divorced.”
His footsteps halted, his expression darkening instantly.
“What did you say?”
Evelyn turned to face him, her gaze terrifyingly calm.
“This farce needs to end.”
