Evelyn Sullivan turned away with indifference. “Suit yourself.”
“You!”
Victoria Farley trembled with rage, her voice shrill. “This is exactly why I can’t stand you—always so cold and lifeless!”
“Anything else?”
The impatience in Evelyn’s eyes only fueled Victoria’s fury.
“Evelyn Sullivan, what kind of attitude is this?!”
Evelyn regarded her calmly. “What kind of attitude do you expect?”
Victoria wrinkled her nose in disgust. “Never mind. I don’t have time for this. Isabella’s back. When are you divorcing Ethan?”
“What does Isabella’s return have to do with me?”
Victoria scoffed. “Stop playing dumb. Ethan and Isabella are in love. Aren’t you ashamed of getting in their way?”
Evelyn’s gaze remained cool. “We’re legally married. The shame isn’t mine to bear.”
“Are all the men in the world dead? Must you steal from your own sister?!”
A mocking smile touched Evelyn’s lips. “Mrs. Farley, Isabella is the one trying to take my husband. Instead of pressuring me, tell her to try harder. If Ethan asks for a divorce, I’ll sign without hesitation.”
“Fine! Remember your words!”
Evelyn walked away without looking back.
Inside the banquet hall, Charles Jackson was delivering a speech.
Evelyn found a quiet corner and took out her phone. Sophia Reynolds immediately sidled up to her.
“Playing that again?” Sophia shot a disdainful glance at the screen.
“Mm.”
Sophia studied Evelyn’s flawless profile and sighed. The Jacksons were blind, favoring a fake gem over the real one.
Recalling what she’d witnessed earlier, Sophia seethed. “I saw Ethan and Isabella all over each other in the garden. Disgusting!”
Evelyn’s fingers never paused. “They were always meant to be.”
“Is Ethan blind? How could he fall for that scheming little—”
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
Sophia gaped. “You’re just going to let your husband cheat?”
“It’s a secret marriage. To everyone else, they’re the legitimate couple.”
Sophia: “…”
“You’re tragic. I’ll treat you better from now on.”
“You can start now. Fetch me some cakes.”
Sophia grinned and stood. “Wait here!”
As Charles concluded his speech, Emily Jackson gracefully took the stage. The Jackson family had three children: the eldest, William, the second son, David, and the youngest, Emily.
