Chapter 3
Caius froze. His hand instinctively went to his collarbone.
“You think I didn’t see it last night?” I pressed on.
He let out a breath, somewhere between frustration and amusement. “She’s always been like that. Bit of a biter–like a damn puppy.”
I cut him off with a wave of my hand.
“Spare me the nostalgia. And don’t forget–she’s not your real sister.”
He went quiet for a beat.
“She’s not. But please don’t twist this into something filthy. It’s not like that.”
I let out a sharp, humorless laugh and shoved him away.
“Get out. Now.”
But Caius just smiled.
He leaned in, eyes crinkling, voice laced with teasing warmth. “Zira… after all these years, I finally made you jealous.”
“I’ll talk to her. Make sure she keeps her distance.”
“Come on, don’t be mad, okay?”
He always knew how to smooth my rough edges–how to speak when I was about to snap.
I was just about to reply when his phone rang.
Thalia, the screen read.
Caius answered, gave a few vague, distracted replies, then hung up.
He reached for my hand.
“I’ll talk to my parents. She’ll move back to their pack house.”

Then his lips brushed against my ear, soft and warm. “Come h
hat you want–I’ll cook just for you.”
And suddenly, I remembered…
Him storming into a bar to drag me out, eyes blazing.
Swallowing his anger, trying to keep his voice steady while I spit venom.
His eyes red–rimmed, desperate and raw. “Zira, what do you want me to do?”
“You’re the one I bonded with that night at the Coming–of–Age banquet. Can’t you just… look at me, even once?”
He was the Alpha of Grayspire Pack–powerful, untouchable.
But for his mate, he was willing to kneel.
My wolf paced inside me, restless, urging me to give him one last chance.
I choked down the lump in my throat.
“Fine, Caius. I’ll trust you again.”
“But if you lie to me~”
I dug my nails into his palm.
“I swear I’ll never forgive you.”
He smiled, then pressed a kiss to the corners of my tear–soaked eyes.
“Zira, I’ve never lied to you. Not once.”
That night, I came home first.
Caius still hadn’t returned.

Thalia dove for a shard of broken glass, pressing it to her wrist, eyes wild.
Her scream split the air.
“I just wanted to apologize! Why would you do this to me?! What else do I have to do–bleed for
Caius froze in the doorway, color draining from his face.
“Thalia!” he shouted, panic rising.

Blood spilled fast.
Caius turned white as a sheet–he’d never looked so terrified.
“Don’t talk like that! We’re going to the hospital–now.”
He scooped her into his arms, not even sparing me a glance.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Caius–I didn’t do this! She did it herself!“!
But he didn’t turn around.
Not once.
I slid down the wall, numb and broken.
Like my heart had been carved open, just like my skin.
