Chapter 2
Three years into our mate bond, and for the first time ever, Caius was in the kitchen now–wearing an apron and making soup.
“Zira, come taste this!” Thalia chirped. “My brother’s cream soup is amazing. Whenever I’m upset, just one sip and I feel all better!”
Yesterday she called me a whore. Now she was all smiles, bragging about how tender and attentive Caius was to her.
Caius, like it was any normal morning, glanced up from the stove. “You’re awake. Come sit.”
Was he serious?
Did he think I was just bluffing last night?
Or worse–had he already made his choice?
I took a deep breath, choking down the fury burning in my chest. Then I grabbed my phone and called my newly appointed Beta, Orion.
“I need breakfast. On my desk at nine. Don’t be late.”
And I walked out–cold, calm, and done.
Behind me, I heard Thalia whine, “I tried to make peace with her! What more does she want? Fine. She doesn’t have to eat it. You made it for me anyway.”
On the drive back to Mooncrest Pack, I dialed my brother.
“I want to break the mate bond.”
There was a pause. Then: “Are you serious?”
My knuckles whitened around my clutch. “Dead serious.”
“You think Caius will agree to this? He fought like hell to mate you in the first place—”
“I don’t care what he thinks,” I cut him off, sharp and cold. “I’m breaking the mate bond–and under pack law, that’s all it takes.”
“Fine. Give me a month. I’ll take care of everything.”
I ended the call and stared out the window as morning sunlight danced across the treetops.
This humiliating morning was enough.
Caius, I’m done,
You and your precious little sister can be soulmates for all I care. Just don’t drag anyone else down with you..
After the morning pack meeting, Caius’s Beta, Dean, showed up at my office with a massive bouquet of yellow roses–my favorite.
I gave it one glance and handed it off to Orion.
“Here. You can have them.”
Right as I did, Caius walked in.
He saw the whole thing.
I didn’t even flinch. Just pulled out a card and slid it into Orion’s shirt pocket.
“Breakfast was perfect. Consider this a tip.”
Orion gave me a charming little smile and accepted it without hesitation. “Thanks, boss.”
Caius didn’t say a word–just waited until Orion left. Then he walked over and backed me up against the desk.
He leaned in, lips brushing my cheek. His voice was low and teasing. “You know exactly how to piss me off. Was that payback?”
I let out and laugh. “If I really wanted payback, I wouldn’t have given him a card. I would’ve handed over the keys to my private wolf castle.”
His fare fell, just a little.
“I caused my entire schedule to come see you. You’re still mad?”
fie wragged his arms around me
“Zira, tell me what you’re so upset about ”

1 almost laughed in his face.
Seriously?
I spent an entire night stewing in rage and heartbreak, and this man couldn’t even figure out why?
I shoved my phone in his face.
It was a friend request–from Thalia.
Her profile picture had clearly been taken that very morning. She was wearing his custom shirt, sitting in a field of yellow roses, cupping her cheeks and pouting at the camera like some innocent little doll.
“Breakfast,” I said icily. “You didn’t make it for me. You made it for her. We’ve been mated for three years, and not once have you ever cooked for me.”
“The flowers? You gave me a bouquet. She threw a tantrum and got a whole damn flower field. Tell me I’m wrong.”
Calus fell silent.
Finally, he said, “If that’s what this is about, then tonight, I’ll cook just for you. And the flowers–I’ll-”
I cut him off with a glare.
“Enough, Calus! How do you still not get it? Thalia crossed a line. And you let her! You let her trample all over the boundary between us!”
He looked stunned. “Zira, what are you even saying? Thalia is my sister.”
I let out a bitter, humorless laugh. “I’m a sister too, Caius. I have a brother. But I don’t wear a micro nightgown and parade around his home, rubbing up on him and his mate. I don’t throw tantrums so he’ll tuck me into bed. And I sure as hell don’t leave bite marks on his damn collarbone.”
I leaned in, eyes locked on his.
“You know what that’s called?”
1 jabbed a finger against his chest.
“Incest.”
